2 apirs blue rams
5 cories
5 otos
male cockatoo

most people think that it would need abotu a 70gl

i have only been able to get a 40 gl Long, tho am v pleased with it

I'd think a male cockatoo with no female to occupy his attention would likely give that attention to the Rams, but I doubt the Rams would welcome it. Other than that I think your set up would all blend well, just not enough room. So pick a couple shoals that are your least favorite and edit your list.

so you think rams or the cocatoos?

would a mixtuer of black and whit widows schaol together?

and prob might mix the neons as well?

IMHO (translation: my personal preference), I would pick a couple of the tetra species, reduce the number of the larger species and increase the number of smaller fish slightly. This would create a lot of visual impact. I think 5 Black Widows and 9 Neons (or Cardinals) would make a stunning combination, especially if you have live plants. I also love Hatchets hovering around the surface, but would drop the number to 5 as well. And either the Rams or Cacs (Viejita II, my personal fave or Orange Flash) would look nice, probably a trio of one or the other. I agree with nc_nutcase - don't add a male Cac in with the Rams without a female to keep him occupied. I think that would be looking for trouble. Of course, I love a nice school of Cories. Have you thought about a Farlowella instead of the Otos? If you're looking for algae control, it will provide the same function, but they're just sooo cool! With good water conditions, frequent changes, etc., I think what I've described would work in your 40L. Just start out slow (after you've cycled, obviously). Patience, young Grasshopper! Besides, it's just another excuse to buy a bigger (additional, not replacement, of course) tank! If you're anything like me, your dream tank is actually MUCH larger than 40 gallons!

Again, JMHO (see translation above  ). Of course, I'm partial to the whole Amazon thing... :*

Good luck!

hows this? its a tough list to scale down, OTP... so many goodies!

since there is such a reduced footprint, you really won't want to have as many aggressive bottom dwellers (my opinion). thus the reduction to one pair of cichlids.

water quality is going to be an issue, and you've got some sensitive fish there with the neons, otos and hatchets. i'd not bother replacing any die-offs out of those groups.

white/black widows are (as mentioned) color variants of the same species. they should school together.

i didn't touch the buenos aires; not familar with the fish.

thanx guys, ther BA tetras are some what larger so i may drop them!

thanx guys!!!! bunch of stars

Can I suggest you drop the hatchets (though they are lovely) because they are prone to being bullied and nipped and both the buenos aires and widow tetras have a reputation for being rather nippy... Oh and the widows get t almost the same size as the BAs.

My opinion is that you should drop the BAs and widows and the cockatoos. Then you can keep the rams and hatchets. Replace the widows with black phantoms (and red phantoms if you like) and mix the schools of neons. If you make the tetra schools a little smaller and/or replace the otos with something else, you'll be fine with stocking.
