I am going to find a good home for my minnows and stock with

neon tetras
rummynose tetras
black neon tetras.

I have a 60l rectangular tank with fluval 3+ filter, so overfiltered plus 2 airstones.

How many could I have of each. I'd ideally want equal amounts. My lfs says 30-40 because they are all small, low waste tetras but I think that seems a bit much.

Could I get away with 8 of each kind, meaning 24 in total. i know this goes above the inch per gallon rule but I want enough so they can school successsfully.

Many thanks.

Sneezy, if it wasn't a new tank I might agree with your plans. For now I would avoid the neons and just get the black neons and rummy nose. The neons that I have had were just not happy in a new tank. Although the tank is cycled, its like a driver with a new license. Its not wise to put that driver on a twisty mountain road and its not wise to put the more sensitive fish into a newly cycled tank.

thanks for the reply. I forgot to weite in the op. i am going to wait 3 months before adding the neons because they need a mature tank. will 3 months be enough do you think.

yeah sounds fine to me, leave it as long as you can for the neons, generally it's agreed that a tank reaches 'maturity' 6 months after the cycle finishes.

Hi Sneezy When you feel your tank has cycled have a look at wild green neon tetras - they have an irridescent green stripe only and are very beautiful. Mine have been hardy as well.
