Have A Look At This!

ermm yes they do.

No, fish do not, I have never seen a study that proves a fish in a smaller cage lives longer, the fish can move and swim in circles. Is it to YOUR satisfaction? No, but to others it is perfectly fine (besides the koi/goldfish) and if they are all healthy I see no problems other than you want to cater to your fish and give them more room. Leave the guy alone he will keep fish as he wants and you will keep them as you want.

How would you know that? Have you ever stuck a danio in a three gallon tank? Yes, humans have larger brain capacities so they do need more space to run and more activity, but that doesn't mean fish don't. Sure they can live, but is it really to their taste? Personally, I don't think you value the life of another - even if it is just a fish - enough.

I hate rules. Cant stand them. All of them have too many loopholes for my liking.
But rules or no rules, "scientific" study or not, fish need space to be HAPPY, not just live. Sure, the fish could live for longer, and that would be measuably with scientific recording tools. But scientists dont have anything to measure happieness, we, fishkeppers, can do this quite easily in the way the fish swim and eat. This is simply why they need space.

No you can't tell if a fish is truley happy or not, and it looks like the fish in the tank are pefectly happy to me?

Ok, we cant tell if a fish we have never met before is happy or not. But I am cirtain that anyone here could tell if their fish was happy or not in seconds. So yes, you can tell if a fish is truely happy or not.

Germ has a very good point though.

So why do you guys have the right to ridicule his fish keeping? You can't be sure if they are happy and they appear perfectly healthy ? If this is the case why do we have so many topics ' omg sad fish here ' ?

But you yourself declare that your fish are happy in their tank :shout:
This thread;
I have no reason to get rid of my fish, they are prefectly happy/healthy.
Fish do not NEED this rule to live a happy healthy life.
no one gets to see them anyway and they are cared for and are happy and healthy.

oxymoron; Rhetorical figure by which contradictory terms are conjoined so as to give point to the statement or expression; the word itself is an illustration of the thing. Now often used loosely to mean contradiction in terms.

T1tanrush quote from '1gal minibow' thread....

How can you comment on fish when you think they live in cages :hyper: plus it completely contradicts your point...

I think to be honest you are only arguing for arguments sake now....

Err, ive said nothing about his quality of fish keeping.

The topics are in the main, to stop people doing this to fish. It is clearly crewl and harsh. It also allows us to feel superior because we know what we are talking about.

Oh, I don't think its cruel/harsh (except the goldfish). He says his fish are happy, who are we to argue to him about HIS fish? Just for an ego trip?

Because it is judgement based on consensus. The 1"/gallon guideline is considered a useful measure by most, especially for beginners. It provides a safety margin for error. As such it could be considered an index for judging health. NOW, there are many who push this to its very limits and manage to maintain beautiful aquaria. However this chap is blatantly taking the proverbial! The tank size is actually detrimental to the fish... how much bigger might those fish be by now, physically, if kept in an appropriately sized tank?

A suitable human comparison would be being bed-ridden, where little use of the muscles leads to dystrophy.

Ok everyone is this discussion does have a point. T1tanrush is right in a way. The 1" rule is NOT the end all be all of fish stocking. Filtration plays a huge part in it. The main issue is SPACE. You can have a 55 gallon tank thats very well filtered and you might get 70-80 neons in there or even more which goes past the 1" rule, but youre NOT gonna get a sting ray in there.

On the other hand, theres the issue of TERRITORY. Red Devils and Parrot Fish are pretty aggressive and they all need their own space, which they definitely do not have. Also these fish keep bumping into each other, which is definitely not a good thing.

Then theres just stunting growth. That Bala has potential to get HUGE as do most of the fish in that tank. And it is true that a fish will not grow larger than its tank, which causes stunting. These fish do not live as long or as healthily as a fish that is allowed to grow to its full potential. It's like having a human live its whole life in a house with 5 foot ceilings.
