Has anyone noticed when a Molly is pregnant, she seems to look really fat.. then days before she gives birth she changes shape to a smaller but squarer shape???

Fools me everytime!! LOL x

I never noticed that Lorraine. It may be true but is something I have never observed. How long before a drop do you see the change? I do have pictures of my female every few days and may be able to confirm what you are saying if it shows in my pictures.

Probably a good four days before... Maybe I have to much time on my hands lol! Doubt that!!

This is my big girl at 4 days before her drop.

This is the same fish 3 days later, right before her drop.

This is what she looked like at 7 days before the drop.

I think she looks very ready to drop in all 3 pictures but you may be right about sheer size. She does look bigger a week ahead of the drop than at 4 days ahead. I had never noticed that before. Good going Lorraine.

WOW she is huge! If you don't mind me saying so... My ones are quite young.. They seem really round about a week before they drop and then I think she started having them as her shape changes. You know how a pregnant woman belly seems to drop and the roundness goes more square looking...

I will have to take photos!! I have some pictures of this fish a wk ago and her size has massively reduced. But she is no where near the size of your fish! lol Size doesnt matter hey? lol I have a little nursery for the ones born last wk. I've bought a tank divider online so they can have there babies in the same tank. I found the plastic fry catcher distreses them.. Loss a pregnant one because of it :( Just realised the water been cold too. After feeling the heater i've realised its tempermental! Gonna have to purchase one quickly.

Lol I can't say i've noticed either

LOL I have quite relaxed fish but my mollys i find real hard work with keeping an eye on them.. i lost a couple of them :( One from stress then found some disapearing. I tried everything... Found the cause in the end tho. I had a ralph cat fish given to me from someone getting rid of there tank... It was eating the my Mollys during the night!! I couldn't believe it cos it seemed so laid back. See, you got to watch the quiet ones... lol

How old are the babies in this picture??

The fry in all of the pictures were from her previous drop. It was exactly 6 weeks between drops so the 7 days ahead is a 5 week old fry by her side, in the middle picture they were 41 days old. Those fry stayed with her in the breeding tank from the day they were born. My big girl is very easy on the fry, I still have most of those fry today. The only ones I don't have are the ones that I sold at auction. The ones I still have were moved to a 55 to grow bigger shortly after her second drop in that tank. The tank was becoming very crowded with all of those fry.

I've got a 25 ltr tank for the babies but i've needed to turn off the filter because it sucked them up.. I done the whole tights thing an they still found there way in there as the filter is central and is deeper than the gravel. Any idea how long they can go with the filter off...? I was hoping to leave it off til the divider shows.... then i can transfere them to the large tank... I can properly cover the filter then.

They do breed easily. I would love to buy some of the sapphire guppies... They are lovely!

If you stay on top of the water changes, fish can live forever without a filter. The problem becomes keeping the filter bacteria alive when the filter is not running and the water is not moving through the media any more. Unless you feel like doing a fresh cycle on the tank, it would be best to find a way to keep the filter running.

Great Tip. I will do a water change for a temp measure.... Bought a divider for them now so thats gonna be in the tank soon... Hopefully then i can transfere the fish and sort out the nursery without disturbing them too much then.
