I have always wanted to breed Tetras, but most common breeds, the books say you need soft acidic water.

I wonder why this is. (apart from the obvious fact that in the natural world this is their habitat)

I am back to breeding Mollies. I know, common and easy. If anyone can come up with some Tetras that will breed in PH Neutral water, I would be interested to know.

i think they need the acidic water among other things to spur them into breeding, i think there are species that fair better than others in harder water like emperor tetras and i think as far as characins go red eye tetras are quite a hardy fish but i wouldn't know about breeding.

Tetra's aside Kribensis are easy to breed in hard water but you will end with a brood of males when they are born due to the conditions :)

If they were bred and raised in a neutral/slightly alkaline water then yes. Ask your dealer/store for history details on the fish you plan to breed. Acidic water is recommended coz it speeds and eases things up for breeding and egg-laying
