Anyone had their Harlequins spawn? They seem so cute when they're spawning. For anyone who's not seen it, they flip upside down (alarming when I first saw it) and "shimmy" (for want of a better term) under a leaf. They seem quite picky about which leave

Anyway, sometimes just the female will do this, seemingly polishing the leaf. Often the male will join her and side by side they shimmy, untill the male wraps his tail around her and they are all done.

Whats also amusing is my crafty pentazona barbs. They see this happening and hang around right up close, waiting to catch any eggs. The biggest of my Rasboras, "blinky" (she only has one eye :() seems to be getting a lot of action :good:

I've also just noticed in the last few days that the males are actually sizing up to each other. Before it seemed quite polite and a couple would just nip off to the bushes so to speak, now I've seen some of the males sizing up and flaring at each other.

I'll try and catch a video :)

Just thought I'd share!

No never seen any harlequins spawn before, sounds quite amusing. :)

Congrats m8 ..

You must be doing something right as for what iv read there not the easiest fish to breed..

Are you going to try and raise the fry??

I lost my 10 a while back due to a heater incident and never managed to find any that looked as good as they were, defo want to get more just need to find the right ones ..

Wow, cool. Thanks for the encouragement :) I didn't realise they were hard to breed. The jousting behaviour seems to have come on after a bit of a re-scape and adding some new taller plants (Hygrophila polysperma) and changing some of the wood for a different piece. Just uploading some quick (crappy) videos to youtube :)

Sounds good, looking forward to seeing them!

What sort of water do you have (hard/soft, pH), I love my little Harlequins never thought they were breedable unless one was truly dedicated...

The water should be soft and acidic (no higher than 4°dH hardness and pH around 6.5) and the temp should be around 28C for them to breed.

Funny that, I believe my water is quite hard, in the high 7 or 8s. I haven't checked it in a while though. Water temp is around 23 Deg C at the moment. Maybe its more that they like certain types of leave shape to spawn under? Mind you, I just saw Blinky have a quick "shimmy" against the filter spray bar so who knows!

Heres a couple of vids. Not very good quality, but its a camera phone  I've just spent the last hour playing with my webcam and windows movie maker, so I'll upload that too (more of a general tank video though).

hmmmm.... strange. I was sure that the conditions had to be similar to the ones I stated for them to breed  .

Anyways congrats :good:

well fish are definitely funny little b**gers....I might give up trying to predict their behaviours and setting up thier ideal conditions and leave them to their own devices....

I think I'm just lucky :) I'm not normally! All I can say is I've done nothing special other than my planting which isn't done yet. I'm trying to make it a little more comfortable for the pentazona barbs as they like more plant cover. The top of the tank is a little bare, so trying to get some tall plants, as well as the amazon frogbit floating plants I've added this week :)

Anyway, if anyone wants to see my movie maker efforts, feel free:
