Sumps

Lets see your designs

Hear your tips

And talk about the basics

First thing before setting one up is read this imo. really helpful website

http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html

Make sure you calculate how much extra water will drop down into the sump in case there's a power failure and make sure there's enough space for the extra water.

This is my sump. The back left section is where the cheato is, section on the left front is where the skimmer is this is where the sump inlet (from the main tank) is as well, section on the right is the return section holding my return pumps, heater and a few pieces of LR. One of the pumps then pumps water back into the cheato section which then flows into the return section thought the weir comb.

If i could redo anything on my sump i would modify it so that the cheato section didnt have the pump feeding it but had an inlet into the cheato section from the main section with the skimmer.

Pictures are old but i will update this topic with new pics when i get new pictures of my tank

I had never seen a sump design like that before chris... I'm working on building and getting things for my upgrade and I may just use a similar design for my new sump! I like it...

Has anybody had any experience with all in one sump systems like the ones that Tunze and Aquamedic do?

How would you set up an alternative without drilling the tank?

Do what i'm doing and use an overflow.

I've bought a tunze one so hopefully it will be good! A lot of people don't like them but I've never had a power cut since I lived where I do so it should be ok.

Famous last words lol.

Nah, overflow boxes are relatively safe. Some can break syphon if too much air collects inside the "n-section" where it carries the water over the tank edge, into the back box. Just ensure that they are adjusted to the correct height, so that should the power go out, your sump can handle the excess water/back flow from the return pump. The only other problem with them is the noise. Some are too small to silence with a durso too. Drilling the tank is definitely the best option but, overflow boxes are an ok alternative.

I am thinking of adding a sump at some stage but will need to use an overflow system. I think I like the idea of a calulerpa system.

The maximum size that would fit under in the cabinet would be 18" high 14" wide and 17" long. The distance from the floor of the cabinet to the top of the tank would be appromimatey 51"

How would you set this up? and what equipment would you need to do this?

Thanks

Have a look on Melevsreef.com. There is lots of information on setting up a sump, sump designs, etc, etc.

I know famous last words etc.!!

I got the glass this weekend and then couldn't find any aquarium safe silicone except for a 20g tube at pets at home! No good.

So i've ordered from ebay a big tube of aquarium safe silicone as B&Q and wickes don't seem to sell it!

Hoping to get the silicone in this week. I might need to wait til pay day to get the return pump though :(
