OK I'm kind of a plant killer at the moment. The only things that stay alive in my tank are either amazon swords or java fern and TBH i'm finding them a little old.

With a budget of £100 can you recommend what additional hardware I could buy that would assist my plants growth. A the moment my lighting is a single Hagen Aqua Glo and thats about it.

The tank is a 4ftx1ftx1ft and has mainly gourami's and an upside down catfish.

hi whats the wattage of the tube?
and what substrate do you have ?

And I thought I'd covered all the bases :)

The substrate is black sand and the tube is 40W.

ok so you dont have enough watts per gallon to require co2 have you tried adding root tabs because if its just sand there wont be enough nutients also you could try growing less demanding plants like cryptocoryns and anubias
also have you been buying bunched plants if so you could try buying potted plants instead as these will have a substantial root on already have a look on the java plants website there plants are great quality and reasonably priced
