Hardness

Hey all,

First post...

I have had a tank for 5 or so years now and have just moved, after a few months all is good but the hardness of my tank has gone through the roof... I am at the moment using rainwater to try to bring this down but with very little joy.. Any tips would be appreciated...

Also my plants are not lasting long, could both these problems be attributed to the fine gravel i am using and its lime content? ( if any)

If you have lime in the gravel then it will push the pH through the roof and will harden the water too. First what do you have coming out of your tap at your new place, not all tap water is the same. What are you calling high pH and hard water? Are you doing frequent partial water changes? What kind of fish are you keeping that you are striving for soft water and low pH?
