Happy With My Platy Fry

hi yesterday my beautiful mickey mouse platy gave birth i knew she didnt have long because she had squared of i moved her to my breeding tank, turned out the lights and half an hour later she had dropped 32 fry which were alive but 4 which were dead. i am really excited as this was one a my first platies i ever bought and i have watched her grow from a small baby to being a mum in the past 6 months.

heres the mum, only pic i could use shes young here and obviously not pregnant

one of my platy fry is bright ornage and a couple are slightly tinted orange so looks like she may have been mating with my sunset platy, so looking forward to seeing what they turn out like

Congratulations Naomi. I always love a new fry drop in my tanks. Right now I have a few survivors from a molly birth and a few from a rainbow cichlid breeding.

i am more excited because this is my first big batch of fry my others have been between 6-15 fry.
i will keep you updated on there progress, just waiting for my female guppy to drop now.

Congratulations Naomi I have a few fish that I am sure are are due to give birth soon (molly and guppy) and want to ask a quick question do you put them in a fry net or what do you use?

I ask this question as not sure if I need to buy something. I have missed them having the babies th last few times and the fry just gets eaten

Welcome to the forum Roser.
If you have compatible fish in the tank and a bit of cover, you can end up like this by doing nothing. This is a 10 gallon with not much cover.

That is my female molly and the fry she was with for the whole 10 days since they were born. If you have lots of adults and not all peaceful ones, you need some good cover or a net to put the fry into. I like to use a separate tank for a new momma because I do not like putting my females into breeding nets or traps.

I have a shark who I am pretty sure will find them quite tasty so perhaps a net is the way forward for the fry.

Mine are getting noticeably bigger by the day. When large enough, I will be at the ALA convention and will bring some of the best with me to show or to sell. Meanwhile I have 2 empty cycled tanks that just need fish to fill them up. I am tempted to put my new mollies in the 55 gallon to help them grow bigger fast enough to sell in April. By then a good growing molly from my nice female should be big enough to impress the auction crowd.

you are lucky no one wants to buy fish here and there are no shows where i live so i guess i just hold onto mine lol

You need to join a fish club Hotdogoramer. It is how you find out about the sales and trades that go on everywhere. I never knew about them at all until joining my fish club. Now I could easily find a sale within driving distance at least once a month just from the network that the clubs end up forming. We all attend each other's fund raising sales.
