I must encourage you to persuade you GF to go with fishless cycle as fish in cycle that much harder on the betta that you planning on getting.

My GF doing a very similar thing but with a 15 litre (4 US Gal) BiOrb Flow but with just shrimps though.

Heres my link to my thread about that.

See what you think, we are doing a fishless cycle and using some bio media from my main tank filter to help seed the filter on the BiOrb.

Kinda cool!

Thanks for that Charlie. Enjoyed reading and looking at it!

Nightmare:
In the iq5 I have found 2 more snails which were killed on sight.

A visit to the LFS with a wallet brang me to this:
• 2 small Anubias plants which I have attached to the driftwood from my iq5 and then moved the entire driftwood over to the GF's betta tank.
• 2 small pieces of driftwood for the iq5
• pebbles for the dymax iq5
• black pebbles to cover the media on the GF's tank
• fake plants for the GF's tank
• a freshwater master api test kit
• gh and kh test kit

Test results are as follows:
Ph- 6
Ammonia- 0-0.01 It was kinda green but barely. I think it'll be right. :)
Nitrite- 0
Nitrate- 30-40ppm

Really happy right now. I haven't tested the betta or shrimp tank yet. gh + kh is untested.

If its just one betta for the GF's tank, you'll be fine seeding it with some of your mature media.

Very exciting :D

The shrimp tank's readings are as follows:
Ammonia- 0.25
Nitrite- 5
Nitrate- 10
Ph- 7,4

I think this means the cycle is doing something! :yahoo:

Betta tank:

I did the driftwood plants myself. :D
The GF chose everything. With a li'l help. ;)

A pic of a now dead snail:

Now the driftwood and rocks I bought:

And the tank as it is now:

The pots will be moved eventually.
The driftwood will soak overnight. :)
Java moss is in its bag til I put it on the driftwood.

The ammonia I put in last night has gone down to zero so today might be the day! :-

I got my hands on some ammonia. I think I got carried away. My ammonia was about 24ppm according to my cAlculations.

Google said too much ammonia will kill the cycle. Don't want that happening. I used the anti ammonia rock from dymax. It's supposed to treat 200 lifers of water but I chucked the whole bag in anyway. Lets see if the rocks work.

Thoughts?

Couldn't you have just done a water change?

Tanks are looking nice, can't wait to see them stocked!

Shall be interesting seeing your GFs Betta!

Happy late Birthday :bday: :-

And RIP Sheldon :rip:

Yes... That seems like a better idea in reflection...
I'll do one now. XD

Did you use the calculator at the top of the page to see how much you needed to dose or did you just guess?
Your gf is going to pick her betta at a store, right? Is there any reason you're not looking online, as she seems to want a specific color/type?

I guessed. Naughty of me I know.

If there's none she likes today we might go online. I've only found one or 2 sites that actually allow you to individually select a betta.

I think you might already know of this but fishchickaquatics only sells in australia.
Have not checked yet if she is on other sites but I know she's on aquabid. Only 3 listings up right now though, here is one of them: http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwbettashm&1379637007
Not the kind you guys are looking for but yeah =o
She has a website but from what I can find there isn't a section showing the bettas, here it is though: http://www.fishchick.com.au/
And here is her youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/Fishchick65

Thanks ninja. I'll show the GF and let you all know of her thoughts.

I've tested again and my ammonia has dropped to about 4-8ppm. That's a lot. The anti ammonia rock works apparently. Then again i did do a almost 100% water change yesterday. ;)

Ammonia is at about 4-8ppm
Nitrite is about 5+
Nitrate is about 0-5.
Progress is good. :)
