I want to set up a refugium to grow some macro algae for nutrient export, but I have limited room in my cabinet. I am considereing buying a decent size hang-on-back filter, hanging on the side of my sump and stripping all the material out and using it as a refugium. I would buy a small light to enchance the growth of the algae.

Is this a good idea? Can anyone suggest a large size filter, or would I be better off getting a custom glass tank to hang on/sit beside my sump tank? Thanks.

i turned an aqua-tech 5-15 into a HOB fuge. Have a rowa-phos bag in the bottom, some LR rubble then macro algae on top with a little book light stickied to the wall for lighting. Within a day i noticed better water clarity and reduced scum on the top of my water.

i'd definately reccommend it
