Managed to get a 5-gallon Eclipse hex on Craigslist this weekend for less than half the retail price -- yay! I research bettas while trying to decide what to do with my still-cycling 30-gallon, and decided that they're awesome fish but not what I want in the 30. And thus began the MTS.

Went out this morning and visited four of the pet stores in my area before finding a nice, healthy selection of bettas. For what it's worth, PetCo here takes MUCH better care of their bettas than PetsMart does. Lots of dead ones at PetsMart, but crystal clear water at PetCo. Probably drove the employees nuts by rearranging bettas so I could take a look at them all, but I finally settled on a healthy, relatively active little guy. He really perked up when I floated his cup in the tank to acclimate him, and since he's been in there he seems to be really enjoying himself. In the store he looked a dark blue color with some hints of red and purple, but now that he's been in the tank for a while he seems to have really brightened up. Now he looks mostly a bright sort of metallic blue with some red around the edges of his body and a little at the base of his anal fin. His ventral fins are red.

Here are pictures taken within his first 10 minutes in the aquarium.

ugh bettas so cute...aren't you super excited!!?? my betta frowns at me when i take pictures, he hates it...but i like how they go paranoid with the slightest movement in front of the tank.

Have fun!

Thanks! Still working on names, but wanted to let him settle in so I could see some personality first. He is a veil tail -- maybe the next one I get I'll look at something fancier, but thought I'd start out with the basics. And when you're on a limited budget, $4 for a fish is much nicer than $15 or so. ;)

he is soooo nice! good choice, altohugh i bet it was hard.
and dont discount future vt's...they are every bit as awesome as the other tail types (can you tell im a sucker for vt's)  and red ones to boot (could i be any more genaric?)
he looks great. have fun with your new boy!
cheers

Also bettas are great including VTS, we all have our preferences though ;) He has got beautiful vivid colours though!

he's lovely  I feel some betta shopping coming on for me... visiting this forum is LETHAL for my bank account lol

Wound up naming him Puck, for the mischievous fair in "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Little guy managed to swim into the filter OUTput slot, of all things, but was able to free himself as soon as I unplugged it. How hard he must have worked to get in there is beyond me! He seems none the worse for wear, though.
