Some aquarium books say wear gloves when putting hand in the tank (to plant plants)in case you have a cut on the hand/arm and get an infection.

Is this true and are rubber gloves ok?- difficult because water goes down them!

as long as you dont have any open wounds on your arm or hand, you can put your hand in the tank. Just make sure you wash your hands and arm well with tap water prior to doing so and dont use any soaps, just water to rinse off the salt from your skin. Scrup wash and dip in the tank :D

I've never worn gloves in my tanks while doing maintance for years now and never had any issues :) , i wouldn't really worry about wearing gloves unless you have some really rough/sharp tank ornements, although then again you shouldn't really go for tank ornements that can potentially cut you as they can do the same to some fish.

I've been sticking my hands in tanks for years without gloves. I constantly have cuts, scrapes & various bashes on my hands due to work. Haven't noticed a problem yet, all 13 of my fingers are fine.

I've never worn gloves either, just have to be careful if you have a cut, and should wear gloves if fish have fish tb.

I have diabetes so am at more risk of infection but I just put my hands in! If I have a cut or scratch I use the other hand. I am only fussy because I have to be. :) I wear gloves if I have to go near the Pleco because of his spikes. I have not seen them come out yet.
