It was a long month waiting, but the tank and cabinet arrived on friday. The delivery man spoke no English, but we got on fine with sign language and smiles, and eventually got the cabinet and tank into the right position.
Here it is, in place, dwarfing our TV, hood is on the settee to the right.

The fluorescent tubes were set up in the reflectors in the hood, but we had to search for the power units and starters, which we found in the cabinet in the end !
Next job was to fill her with water, gravel and a few bits of wood. One thing I had not expected was the set up of the cover glass over the top of the tank, which is all siliconed in, on it's sliders. It only gives a limited maximum opening but, thankfully, I was able to squeeze both the large pieces of wood I had through the gap and into the tank. Phew !
I think the cover glass arrangement is going to be a slight pain in the long run as is will get covere with gunge, algae and limescale, and one cannot take it out fully to clean it. I will just have to do my best.

The tank is to be filtered by a new AllpondSolutions 2400 external and a mature Eheim 2217. The Eheim will fit by the side of the cabinet behind the TV, but the other larger filter went in the cabinet, and the pipes fitted nicely through the holes in the back of the cabinet. I also bought a new Koralia wavemaker (900 lph) to give a bit more flow around the bottom of the tank, as both external fiters output into the tank via spray bars near the surface.

The first real problem occured with the lights. The tubes themsleves fitted within the hood, but the tubes with the end caps of the power units on them did not ! However firmly I pushed them on, they were always going to be about 5mm too long to fit within the hood, so would only fit at an angle, and not into the clips on the reflectors.

500tanklores4.jpg

So i phoned ND to discuss the problem, and it seems that they didn't actually check that the tubes plus the power unit's end caps actually fitted within the hood. So an amicable agreement was made. They would refund me the money I paid for the light units and tubes, and I would source locally some slightly shorter lights that would fit within the hood. They would then collect the "too long" light units from me when their delivery man was next passing in this area. A bit of a pain, but probably the best compromise considering what had happened.
So I've been around the local LFS's and got what I need. It was a pretty simple job really, to adapt the reflector clips for slightly shorter tubes, and there's still plenty of light in the tank.

The next problem was that the 300W heaterstat that I had bought for the tank was faulty and the thermostat was not working at all properly. So i had to take that back on sat morning for a replacement .. thankfully with no problem.

So later on the saturday, with a goo heaterstat and the water all up to temp, and both filters running nicely, the fish were introduced from my other tank.

So it's my pair of severums left in the 300 litre (80 gallon) and into the new 500 litre (130 gallon) went ...

2 x Uaru
1 x chocolate cichlid
2 x threadfin acara
2 x Brochis splendens
8 x dwarf neon rainbows
4 x red eyed tetras
1 x bristlenose
4 x cories
2 x Otos
1 x golden gourami
2 x platies
1 x stiphodon goby
and ..... Edwin (my stunted non-growing 1.5" severum)

Eventually, all is good with the tank. I'm pretty pleased with it really. the fish complement is great, although some of them will need to grwo out a lot to make the tank look rather fuller. The chocolate cichlid is only about 2.5" for example. The Uaru have also got a lot of growing to do. And those 3 are my centrepiece fish really.
So this is what it looks like today ....

This thing looks ENORMOUS in my living room, but I'm not complaining ! I think my wife and daughter will get used to it too. My good lady is very much into her fish too, and she got a new Betta and tank out of the deal too, so she's pretty happy.

My pair of sevs also seem to be happy to have the whole 300 litre to themselves. Bruce is rampantly displaying to Hetty . He's a seriously horny severum. But she's just not taking the hint just yet. We watch and wait !

Not sure if I'm happy with the aquascaping in the 500 yet. I would appreciate any thoughts and ideas concerning that. All the plants are plastic or silk BTW, as the Uarus would demolish anything live.

That looks an awsome setup, Hamfist!

I'm glad to see you went shopping for some more Neon Dwarfs too, making it a school of eight!!

I might take you up on that offer of popping around to North Baddesley in the near future for a drool, while you are more than welcome to pop round to my humble abode in Bitterne if you need some street-fighting backup ;)

Nice to see another ND Aquatics tank, looking good :)

The cover glass does come out. We'd have had massive trouble getting our wood in there if not. You have to take the plastic sliders out as well as the glass.

I see you went for the same piano hood. I must say that is the one thing I wish I'd changed. It is very heavy, so we're considering making a smaller lid inside to lift up for feeding.

Seems you had the same delivery man as we did  . I do think it rather odd that they only send one bloke to carry the tank. Not sure what I'd have done if my OH hadn't been there for my delivery, noway could I have helped lift it.

Did you go for ND Aquatics lights? I bought mine separately as I wanted T5's.

Your filter is an interesting choice. Can I ask why you decided against the FX5? I must say my FX5 is brilliant, a fantastic filter and very quiet once run in.

I have the same thing as you with smallish fish looking lost in a huge tank. just have to remind ourselves these fish do get big eventually. Well, my O seems to get bigger each day, especially with all the insects we keep feeding him

Enjoy the tank!

Looks great. I wish I held out for a 150Gal but was scared it would be too much for the floor to handel. It's a good size I'm sure the fish will love it.

I will have a closer look later. I guess getting the sliders and all out means cutting them out with a razor blade ?

Yes, it is VERY heavy. Definately a 2 man job to lift it on and off. Like you I am already considering changing it. What I am actually considering is removing the hood entirely and mounting the lights in a small home-made wooden lights enclosure. That would leave the rest of the top of the tank looking a lot more open, which I like the look of. All I am worried about (as I mentioned before) is keeping all the cover glass arrangement clean and nice looking.

Yes, I did go for the ND Aquatics T8 lights. Although as I mentioned I did have to buy my own to fit correctly in the end. I went for T8's though as the reflectors and clips for T8's were already there. I'm happy with T8's. I'm not one for liking too much extra light.

I went for the APS filter due to price. Less than half the price of an FX5. Seemed to be worth a try ! It does it's job well but is a bit noisier than I like. My wife says it's not too bad, but the noise bugs me. I suspect I may be replacing it with an FX5 at some point in the future, purely for noise reasons.
THe smaller APS filter (1400 lph), that I'm using on my 300 litre, is much quieter. It's just the bigger one that is rather noisy.

THanks. My chocolate cichlid in particular is growing quite incredibly. She has doubled in weight in about 2 weeks. Amazing !

-- To everyone else .... thanks for your nice comments !

It may be different in your tank as you have different dimensions, but our sliders come right out and you can take the two pieces of glass out fully. I think there must be a way to take yours out without cutting, as if you wanted to put a 2/3ft fish in the tank how could you do it. May be worth asking ND :)

We have very hard water, so some scum does form under the cover glass but condensation seems to 'cover' this up, plus we take the glass out to give a hose over every few weeks if needed.

I like your idea for replacing the hood. What we did with the lights was mount the lights themselves inside on the hood, then the controllers outside and around the back of the hood. Works well, and looks neat and tidy.

I think T8's would be sufficient lighting for a 2ft depth, but as you know mine is 2.5ft depth plus the hood, so a lot of depth for the light to penetrate and nothing less than T5's will do. What controller did you go for? :)

I can understand why you went for that filter if it's that much cheaper :) I do think the FX5 is worth every penny though, and I am on a tight budget so not just saying that  Filter noise bothers me a lot. We have a concrete floor in this house, so the filter on my 50g which was fine on the carpeted/wooden floor in the old house, makes a humming noise on the bare wooden/concrete floor in our new house. Will have to be replaced at some point.

I think the tank will look great with a black background :hey:

Thanks for the reply chilli !

Now had a good fiddle, and realised that the front sliders are not siliconed in, so it is easily possible to remove all the cover slips.
My good lady was not impressed with the suggestion of my home-made luminaire, although she is very keen on "opening up" the top of the tank, visually. So we are actually going to fork out for a proper Luminaire, probably the Classica one (actually made by Arcadia). It'll look really nice and, yes, defo better than anything I could make myself ! They are about £135 on ebay, and I'll get about £55 back as a refund for the controllers I bought over the weekend, so it's not a huge expense, when considered as a percentage of the total cost for the tank, and all the ancillary bits !

Oooh excellent, would love a luminaire :) Post pics when it's all setup won't you :hey:

really nice looking tank :) just a thought but have you considered lights coming from the ceiling? Like three pendants coming down on the tank? If I were to ever get an utterly massive tank thats what I would do but thats for a 8 foot or something but i think it would look good here as well :)

Yeah. Definately thought about it, but ended up wanting a luminaire that sits on the ends of the tank. Hopefully will order it today ! Just need to get confirmation that it wil fit on the tank. They all say length - 150cm, whereas 5 feet is 152.4 cm. I want to know for sure it'll fit before I order it !

great looking tank. my tank is nd too . i got around the siliconed in runners by simply running a stanley blade along the back of the runners and cutting the silicone bead. now i can completely remove the cover anytime i need to :good:
