hallo!

iā€™m primarily an arachnid keeper (true spiders, tarantulas, and scorpions) and have been keeping arachnids for 25+ years now but have just recently branched out into the fish game

currently have a black mustard-male betta splendens that Iā€™ve had for several months now with no issues - working on building up an aquarium for a fire-mouth cichlid which will be my 2nd specimen

my goal and dream fish is Pygocentrus nattereri or Red-Bellied Piranha but am slowly working my way up to this through keeping other tropical freshwater species

Iā€™m just hear to learn as much as I can and network with other likeminded people - as for me Iā€™m in my 30s, from Germany but live in the US for now, Iā€™m a student mortician and I work in the mental healthcare field rn as a behavior specialist - i also enjoy play drums, chess and politics - cheers!

Hello! thatā€™s so cool you have arachnids. i really want a Mexican red knee tarantula or an Arizona Blonde (or both) but my mom is scared of tarantulas šŸ˜’

Welcome to TFF. Check out our Pet of the Month contest and be sure to vote. One of the entries is a spider.
We will have another pet of the month contest in September. Hope you enter one of your pets in that contest!

some people are just arachnophobic unfortunately but i can say that those 2 species are absolute sweethearts - easy going, docile, hardy, etc - excellent beginner choices for a T

sheā€™s not arachnophobic, i just think the thought of a spider in the house that eats live bugs grosses her out.

can i see a spider?
i like jumping spiders
but they are sometimes too feisty to keep

i'm only afraid of particular types of spiders. i don't care about most tarantulas, the slow-by-nature and fluffy haired ones, but i really don't like spiders with particularly thin and bare legs. that also happens to be the description of the most common spider in my area, though...
i've walked right next to tarantula burrows that are across from my house before, and it just doesn't scare me for some reason. i suppose that it's similar to some people's fear of dogs - some will only fear fighting dogs.

the tarantulas which have ā€˜hairā€™ are all what we in the hobby would call ā€œNew Worldsā€ (meaning they originate from somewhere in North, Central or South America) - those without these urticulating hairs (which are more like harpoon spikes than actual mammalian hair) are called ā€œOld Worldsā€ and have stronger venom levels comparatively

all spiders, whether their ā€œtrue spidersā€ or tarantulas would rather flee and hide than doing anything else - itā€™s only when they feel cornered that they strike a threat pose or attempt a bite - i would be v surprised if a T came out of those burrows while you walked by thatā€™s for sure! definitely not to be feared, just respected (and i realize theyā€™re just not some peopleā€™s cup of tea too lol)
