Half-flare?

Hello everyone!

My betta of more than a year and a half has been doing something weird lately. When he flares his gills, he only flares one side of the gill cover. He doesn't show both sides, only one. Is that normal? Could the other half be damaged or something? Thanks!

Here are a few pics of his half-flare. These are the best I could take lol. The thing is, he only started doing this a couple months ago, I guess. It's relatively new and I can't think of any reason why this would start up so suddenly and persist for this amount of time.

My boy orion does that too. But, he's still really active

One of my boyfriend's bettas does that. He seems perfectly happy, though. I guess my only suggestion would be to keep an eye on him. Make sure he's acting normal, etc. Good luck
