Just thought i'd post a couple of pics of my home bred guppies. i only managed to keep 4 out of 40 original fry. these are now about 6 months old.

i have three identical to the first pic and my favourite (sparky) in the second pic.

all are female with no males in the tank (for at least 5 months). why then is sparky's gravid spot soo dark???

The only other fish in the tank are glowlight tetras and White Cloud Mountain Minnows?????

very pretty, do you mind if i post a couple of my homebred guppies (i'm gonna try to get some pics now, mine are approx the same age) and maybe we can start a little thread?

i have 17 homebred guppies some are bigger than the others so i moved them in to my community but they are all different colours my fav is red with black spots and yellow body i cant get pics sry

EDIT: any tips on getting such great pics of guppies? can't seem to get mine to stop moving..

well tried my luck at getting the guppy pictures from the 46 gallon - nothing good came out - too many hormones in the tank for them to sit still...but, since they all look pretty similar, here is a picture of one of my males in a cup....

they are Mosaic Guppies (can't find much info on mosaic guppies online - they look closest to Snakeskin in body pattern, but the tail looks very much different) i bought from a great fish store...he stocks them quite often so i go back every once in awhile, giving him mostly females and some males, and get another female from a different strain to avoid severe inbreeding issues...right now, in the community tank i haven't seen any fry from them so i'm glad my fry cleanup crew has been helping to keep the guppy population in check!

they all look fairly similar...my females are very dull gray with either a black tail with some yellow or a gray tail with yellow iridescence....the males are mostly yellow/black with varying amounts of black in the tail and spots of orange near the pelvic fin

Lovely guppys you got there! Hmm...Looks like im gonna get some pics of my guppys too but i need to set up some new lighting for the tank first but i'll see if i can get some pics later

set your camera to the fastest shutter speed and turn Macro on.

then take about 70 pictures and you'll end up with 2 good ones!!! ;)

:kewlpics: Very nice tanks and fish. They look very well kept and just as clear as a picture. You guys should be very proud of your fish and the tank.. :kewlpics:

In answer to the question about the gravid spot. Livebearers can store semen for months and months before deciding that they're gonna be pregnant!!

I never had any male platties in my tank yet after about 6 months, I had three batches of fry :D

Great pics by the way!!!

It could be that she isn't pregnant at all and just looks that way. You said you bred these guppies, have they ever been in a tank with a male? If never, then she can't be pregnant. Storing semen isn't the same as making it out of thin water.

It also could be that one of your fry is actually a short finned male. Do any of your fish have very skinny bodies with no belly or gravid spot at all? Could be a male whose tail is short or hasn't grown in all the way.

Hard to say. Wait a few weeks and see if you get fry. That will at least answer the question of whether she is pregnant or not.

thanks for the replies.

i'm still baffled i'm afraid. this was the sequence of events.

-bought 2 male and 4 female guppies about 1 year ago.

-over time (early days :*) bad water etc...) lost all but one female.

-that single female gave birth to 40 fry 6 months ago (at least a week after the last make died)

-out of the 40 fry i have 4 left. the bright neon yellow tail one (in thread above) and 3 identical to the sunset colour one in markings and body shape.

-so in theory she CANT be pregnant unless they can breed with white cloud mountain minnows or glowlight tetras. (discounting plec and amano shrimp or i'd be a rich man)

hmmmm :dunno:

Well, yes she can. She can have up to 7 pregnancies with no males. Over however long amount of time.

Very pretty Guppies, too!
