I have been treating my tank for fin rot. One of my angel fish died from it.

I followed the instructions on the medication which said to remove any carbon filters while medicating.

I have a 24 inch undergravel filter, with 2 pipes coming up each side that had filters on each one with that black carbon in them.

Now my question is, do I need to replace them with new carbon filters (you cant get the old carbon out, you need brand new plastic bits with the carbon in them), or can I just put the old ones back on.

My husband seem's to think so, but I seem to think not, because they might have the fin rot disease in them.

What should I do?

Thanks heaps.

Put brand new carbon in, the other carbon no good once its dryed up.

wow! I would have thought otherwise, my logic is that it comes dried..... so why not be dired once again. I used my same carbon after an Ick break out, no problems there......

if you medicate with the carbon in, it is likely that the medication will not work, i mean no offence but i would suggest a change of filter type. perhaps an internal?

I didnt medicate with the carbon in, I took it out because I know it sucks it all up.

But my thoughts exactly that carbon comes dried up, so why would that be a problem? Wouldnt it un - dry when its back in the tank?

And I am thinking of adding another filter as well as keeping my UGF, so far I think my UGF has been fantastic.

Once the black carbon is wet it is then activated, when it drys up it no longer works.
They only have a shelf life some say two days to six weeks.
