Hi all
I have recently converted my tank from coldwater to tropical after buying a peppered cory and enjoying its charecter enough to buy more, stripey ones, panda ones, bronze...., but thats nothing to do with my following question
Ive had guppies in the past as I was told they were ok in a cold tank, but they didnt really thrive. Now that its tropical today I bought 1 dalmation molly (female), 1 silver molly (female), 1 blue guppy (male) and got 6 female guppies from my uncle. Unexpectedly the blue male guppy has spent all afternoon showing off too the silver female molly. Ive read various opinions of wether they can cross breed but the general opinion is yes they can but they rarely survive and are often sterile. I just wondered if anyone can conferm either way if its possible/wise to do so. Between my Uncle and I we have guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails, is it worth seeing if any of these will crossbreed and which should be male/female.

Thanks in advance. :good:

Guppies and mollies can cross but very rarely do, and the fry are always weak and die soon after birth.

Platies and Swords can cross too but thats it, nothing else

Welcome to the forum Fin Fan.
The answer is very simple. Guppies and mollies can cross in theory, but I have kept those species together for over 40 years and have never seen a cross even though many randy guppies have made the attempt over that time period.
Platy and swordtail crosses are not only possible but have led to the wide variety of colors and finnage that we have in both domestic swordtails and domestic platies that are available today.
Other combinations of these 4 fish are not possible. Poecilia reticulata and Poecilia shenops or even domestic mollies, cannot cross to any Xiphophorus such as platies and swordtails.
