right here goes.
i have a communty tank with guppys platies few cloud minnows snails and shrimp.
i have had several batches of guppy and platie fry but recently have noticed a couple of the, "platie" fry
that are gettin guppy mixed colours i have seen platies red/orange and yellow/orange and some slight black,
but have never seen any one fish that are bright silver, orange, red, and even a hint of blue all the same one.
i have read conflicting stories on here and other sites about them being able to cross breed but others saying there is no way on earth they can. whats the truth of it? can any one help?
i am sorry for not being able to post a picture as of yet but they are too fast that every picture i take is so blurred that its not reconisable.
any help would be greatly appriciated
thanks spike

It is very unlikely that they are hybrids. Livebearers will generally successfully interbreed between same body type species, so for example guppy and endlers, or platys and swordtails. I do not think species of different genus can cross at all, to be honest.

Do keep in mind that a lot of fish carry more colour genes than they actually show: that is why we can breed them for colour.

Ditto.

While some fish will cross breed. Platies and guppies is one of the impossible crosses.

The Xiphophorus group will simply not cross with other parts of the Poecilia. Platies are always a Xiphophorus, even when they are the result of platy / swordtail crosses. Guppies are Poecilia reticulata and simply cannot cross with any Xiphophorus. When you see conflicting stories, you need to treat them as exactly that. They are stories told by people who do not know any better, they are not fact.
