Hi everyone,

I need some advice on treatment for a guppy who I am reasonably sure has saprolegnia (fungal infection). On Saturday I purchased some guppies (4 female, 1 male), introduced them gradually to their tank, and then left them to get settled. At the end of the day, I noticed the male guppy seemed to have some white fungus growing on his side, which I diagnosed as saprolegnia. I'm not sure if he had it when I bought him, or if the move stressed him and he somehow came down with it. In any case, I started medicating with API Fungus Cure (capsule form) and aquarium salt the next day, and followed the instructions through to the end. Today is the last day of treatment, and as directed I will do a 25% water change and introduce active carbon to remove the medication.

My question: My guppy has improved a vast amount. He went from hiding in the corner with clamped fins and looking miserable to swimming around happily, fins out, eating like a pig. The fungus has reduced tremendously in size. However, as of this morning there were still (albeit) small sections of the fungus still clinging to his body. The medication should be removed tonight. Should I wait a day and then start a second round, or do you think he'll be fine? Should I try to rub the remaining fungus off with a qtip? (I heard that suggested somewhere). This is my first time with guppies, and my first time medicating against fungus, so I'm not sure what I should expect. What are your expert opinions?

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it.

How does he look now? You could try treating with something like Pimafix perhaps. That way you don't have to use more meds unless it starts getting worse again.
