Guppy Purchasing And Breeding

Hey thanks never thought of that. Fish conventions never heard of those either. Would you happen to have some information on how I can find one in my area I live in Maryland. Southern Maryland to be exact. Maybe you can answer this question for me. I have a female guppy in my tank and I noticed a few minutes ago that her tail looks like something has been nipping at it. do male guppies do this? Or is it a disease I need to treat? Thanks oldman47!

Male guppies do not routinely nip at the females. If you have a tail loss something else is going on. It may be disease or may be the result of other fish in the tank that are not s peaceful as guppies.
Finding a convention is easy. You simply go to the site of teh association that you are interested in and look. It is often a quite prominent post somewhere on their site. In the east coast area, the American Cichlid Association often holds a convention in the east. I have not kept up on the guppy association. This year the American Killie Association is in Oregon so a bit of a trip for you. The American Livebearer Association is in Detroit this year and is where I am headed. For local clubs, we have a nice listing at the top of the forum in our welcome area for both UK and US listings of clubs. Our listing is more up to date and more complete than the one on the FAAS, Federation of American Aquatic Societies, site. The US listing is here.

The only other fish in the tank are females platys and female mollies. I have 6 male guppys and 5 females because I lost a female last night. Would the other females do it that arent guppies doing this or should I lean more towards disease and what do I buy to fix it?

I have seen a female molly be quite aggressive at times. Each one seems to have her own personality so it is hard to guess. Platies can also play a bit rough at times but unless they are crowded there should be no trouble there. If all of these fish are in your 10 gallon tank, the chances are that simple crowding is degrading the water quality and the crowding is causing some aggression by otherwise peaceful fish.
