Hey all! One of my young females just dropped her first batch of fry. She had quite a bit of trouble birthing and now has a rather ugly prolapsed uterus. Obviously she should be removed from breeding (if not euthanized), but is this something congenital that should cause worry in regard to breeding her offspring?

I would deffinatly pull her out of breeding,i have never had this happen to one of my guppys but i am sure oldman47 when he reads this he will give you great advice on what to do

I wish that was true HughesSomeFish. It is a condition that I have not noticed in any of my fish before. I have seen reports, on other reliable forums, of females having difficult births if fed a high protein diet during the gestation. The concept was that the fry grow too large while developing and cause injuries to the female. I do not recall any advice of what to do when the damage has been done though. I always prefer my own experience to things that I read, but this one is outside my experience. I would try isolating her and letting her try to heal herself, fish are remarkably resilient when given the chance.

Good news! Her prolapse has nearly disappeared. All that is left is just a bit of redness. She is eating normally but seems to be a bit less active. The fry did not really appear to be any larger than normal and she is a big fish. I fed her spirulina, brine shrimp, and Spectrum Thera A as well as whatever algae tabs and veggie treats she could steal from the snails. It's a heavily planted tank so there is always an abundance of forage. I suppose I could be guilty of overfeeding a bit lately. I have baby Pomacea bridgesii in there and I wanted to make sure they got their share.

when the prolapsed ended if its alright for me to ask, what did you do to heal it,like did you pull the guppy out of breeding?or just let it be?

She is in isolation at the moment. I do not intend to breed her again but she likely has several more sperm packets to carry her into 4-5 months of pregnancies. I hope the poor girl holds up. :(
