I'm so mad right now. I finally figured out who's been ####in murdering my male guppies: this little guy I "rescued" from a tank of angelfish at Petco. I felt sorry for it and they gave me it for free. I always considered it my endler/guppy runt. So he's lived in my 5.5 guppy tank for many months now. I used to have a prized yellow snakeskin guppy, who disappeared one day. Then, my prized yellow delta male started getting bite-marks on his tail and died soon after. Well, recently I had to move my older baby guppies into the 5.5 gallon to make room in the nursery tank for the newer babies. I put them in the tank with the "runt" about 2 days ago. Today, I wake up to find that my only male guppy baby is hiding in a cave. A closer look and I saw that his tail was nipped really badly! Oh I was so angry, this stupid fish has been killing off all my males one by one. So now, I put the injured male guppy back into my nurserey tank. What should I do to make sure he heals properly? Should I use aquarim salt or medication on him?

That's odd is that guppies rarely nipping the fins of other guppies. What color is this "runt"?

Short tailed guppies and long tailed guppies are not good mix if there's females.

Or you might got a gambusia, instead of the guppy. Gambusia are fin nippers and are grey colored ones.

Moll may be onto something, Gambusia's are nasty little bliters.

Dose it have any colour to the body or fins.

can't take credit Butch mentioned it and I just looked for a image would never of thought of it myself today my head doesn't work I'm under a quilt suffering from flu.

Gambusia (known as mosquitofish) are always found mixed in the feeder fish shipments and if LFS workers feed the angelfish with feeder guppies, then they undoubt scooped the gambusia with other feeder guppies for the angelfish.

But if your "runt" has some colors then it would be weird guppy you had, through it would be rare for the male guppies killing other males for any reasons or no reason.

don't be angry at a fish lol

it's important not to anthropamorthise the little fella...

no, the murderer is not a mosquitofish, he is way too colorful. i believe he's a mix of guppy and endler livebearer because of his colors, which is why i was so drawn to him. here's a shot of the culprit:

i'm sure it's him because the only other species i have in the tank is a sparkling gourami, which is so peaceful that he never bothers any of my fish. plus, this guppy/endler mix is really fast and really agressive towards my guppy baby females. i used to have dwarf platys in the tank with it but i had to move them because he harassed the female like crazy. here are the two male guppies that he killed off. these two were my FAVORITES, so i was really sad when they both died:

What should I do to make sure his tail heals? Should I add medication to the nursery tank?

I've had aggressive males and females before, but none that were blood thirsty. It's quite probable that you've got a gambusia. They're being used quite often now as "feeder guppies" though they are not actually guppies. That fact that you picked him out of an angle tank and that he is small (gambusia males are smaller than guppy males), suggests this may be the case.

Even if he is colored, it may still be the case that he is a guppy/gambusia hybrid. The two can cross.

Fishaddict99, don't go blaming endlers for this one. That wild colored guppy has no trace of endler in his colors and he's the wrong body shape for an endler. He may be a very strange guppy with other things like gambusia in his background but its not endler.

i'm not blaming endlers for anything! i always wanted endlers and a few months back, i thought this guy was an endler because of his color. since i had no idea what kind of a species he was, i always referred to him as my endler/guppy mix.

like i posted before, does anyone know what i should do to heal my baby guppies tail?

Yep, get some Melafix. It is the best thing to use to heal wounds. I use it all the time and I love it because it's natural. Here is a link so you can see what it is... Melafix
Good luck. I would get rid of that one fish if you think it's him. Also if you have females in there, he will make really weird hybrid babies, I have had one of those before. Got it from walmart actually with my plants. Did you ever think that it could be your gourami? Every gourami I've had has been the culprit of fins missing.

Thanks, I've got some Melafix on me. I guess since it's natural, it's safe to use in the guppy nursery tank. Yeah I'm pretty sure that little guy was the culprit. I've got him floating in a spacious breeder set-up. Since I put him in there a week ago, the rest of my baby guppies have been fine living with the sparkling gourami. Peace has finally been restored!

What you doing with your hybrid? Do he had to live in the cage for forever? I would take him in as I have some female gambusia for him.
