Hi all
Really hoping you can help. Our male flame guppy has become red all around his right eye, it looks like as though there are no scales and you're seeing the flesh underneath.

Tbh it doesn't look great and I'm a bit freaked out. He's mostly swimming around in the same place. He's been getting into fights with another guppy (they've been circling each other) and I'm also worrying that he's losing and this is a result. Please, any help welcome, I don't mind moving him to the baby tank but not if this is some sort of disease :| Equally re getting some girls in...

The photo is blurry but I can't get clearer.

Update: OK well he's had a bit of a swim/chase around the tank but is now back where he was.

Well I hope so. Is there anything in particular people can recommend we do so he heals?

Hi Frog-girl

Do you have any Melafix? It's great stuff for helping to heal wounds in fish and it's a natural product (contains tea tree oil).

Sometimes when fish are a bit boisterous or chasing too fiercely they can scrape themselves on things in the tank (e.g. rocks/ornaments etc). Sometimes fins can get torn or they may end up with exposed body flesh.

Providing this is the cause, then Melafix should speed up the healing process.

If you suspect it's not a battle wound then the other thing it could be is a bacterial problem causing body rot/patches of red tissue - this should be treated with an anti-bacterial treatment, such as Myxazin.

Regards

Athena

If you put the fish in a glass of cold water which has just started to ice over then this will stun it - then quickly kill it with a brick. I think this is the most human way to deal with a dying fish. :good:

Thanks Athena, I'll have to go and investigate the pet shop for those things (don't worry, won't do both at once).

Darkfung, that sounds terribly troll like. Needless to say I shall be ignoring your 'help'
