Hey guys, for some reason one of my male guppies keeps chasing my harlequin rasboras. They’ve been living together for about 7 months now but lately he keeps chasing them. I see no fin damage but is it stressing them out? Also my rasboras are very big and almost the same size as my guppy.

How big is the tank? What other fish (and how many) do you have? Do you have female guppies?
Also your water conditions and parameters may be relevant so please can you post them?

My tank is 15 gal. I have 1 non aggressive beta and 3 Cory’s. My water conditions are all fine. The guppy seems like he’s just playing but the rasboras may not like it.

If there are no female guppies, he is being a typical male guppy. They will try to mate with other males, and any other non-guppy fish in the tank. It's just the way they are.

I agree with essjay. Male guppies just seem to have to be chasing something all the time.

Sorry to try to ressurect this but I find myself in a similar situation. I just added 6 purple harlequins yesterday and the one guppy I have in the tank is chasing them everywhere. Geordie what did you in this situation? Would putting a female guppy in calm him down?

Your guppy considers the new fish as intruders and is trying to drive them out of his territory. Monitor them over a week or so and hopefully he will stop being a pain in the butt. If he doesn't and continues to harass them, you will have to remove him or them.

Thanks for the response. I love this guppy but I have a feeling he isn’t going to get along well with anyone. I’ll have to think about what I’m gonna do if he doesn’t chill out. Thanks again.

You can buy breeding nets from pet shops and they hang inside the aquarium. You could put the male in that for a week and then see how he goes with the new fish. Add a plant to the net if you try this so he feels more comfortable.

After a day and a half the guppy got tired of chasing and stopped. They are still living together fine now. Every once in a while he still chases him but it's nothing to worry about. I'd just give it some time, he'll probably get bored of it eventually.
