i have two guppies who have always spent most of there time at the top of the tank but have recently taken to gulping for air.

My tank is a 125l juwel rio, Water levels are:

Ammonia - 0 ppm
Nitrite - 0 ppm
Nitrate - 40 ppm
PH - 6.8-7.0

Any Ideas what could be wrong with them?

I had platties that did that, the nitrates was the problem.

I was advised to do big water changes.

I did that and i also went to feeding every other day.

Is there enough aeration in the tank?
Any other fish in the tank besides the guppys. If so which type and how many.
What do the fish gills look like. Do they look pale with excess mucas or red and inflamed.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing, darting, erratic swimming, excess mucas on gills or body of fish.

plenty or aeration in the tank, theres 9 neons, 1 angel, silver shark, and a pleco as i said they have always spent most of there time around the top of the tank and ive had them for around 10 month

i'd say so, i have some very upset platys and guppies as i changed them from a 60l to 180l... go figure lol

give them a chance to settle with the lights off and if they look worse ask again, as they could be just stressed like mine are

Your tanks overstocked.

Bala shark need 100 gallons tanks and shouldn't be kept in less than a group of 3.

Water change and increase aeration.
