:dunno: my young female guppy had 7 fry, one died. now there are 6 fry that are 7 days old. the mother's girth is still just as big as it was before and i can still see gravid spots (fry eyes). is she going to be ok? is there one fry blocking the rest from being born? i know complications like this arise in humans so, i'm sure they do in fish as well! she is still periodically going to the back of the tank and practically resting atop the gravel as she appears to give birth to more with no success. how can i help her? will she die if she can't birth the fry?

My female guppy had 23 babys (all lived ) and got a little thin and the next day was as big as she was before she had the 23 I don't know whats going on with her shes hugh and can't really swim... I asked about it but no one answered me..

Hope someone answers you and good luck with your little babies ( mine are 14 days old now)

Erin :) :D

well perhaps its natural, it sometimes takes women a long time to lose their bellys after childbirth, so maybe it works in the same way??

lol, or perhaps i'm just being thick

thank you all for your replies, i'm totally new keeping guppies and raising their fry.

I had a young guppy mom who had her first batch of fry. She had about a dozen of them (at least that I found) but remained just as fat afterwards. After a few days it was clear that she was done even though she was still very big so I let her loose in the tank. Exactly a month later she had a huge batch of fry, over 30 and when she was done she was nice and thin again. Although she definitely got bigger during the last week of the second pregnancy she stayed relatively the same from week 3 of the first pregnancy until she gave birth the second time. I suspect that the fry develop at different rates and she stayed fat because she had some beginning to develop although not yet mature enough to be born. This second batch of fry was not only much larger, but the individual fry seem to be developing at a faster rate, so maybe they were a little more mature when born and she just "held them in".

wow, thanks for the help...great info, she is a young mom too and I can actually see the eyes of her fry through her gravid spot, she is huge! your reply will keep me from worrying so much about her.
thanks again!
