hello i've been keeping guppy fry in a breeding box for a week or so. only six in there and they have plenty of room. i'm just wondering at what stage can i let them out? their not at the stage of knowing what sex they are. the tank only has guppies in with a 1 to 2 and a half male to female ratio. thanks

As long as they're big enough not to be eaten, but with other guppies i'd imagine they will be ok soon.

If you have decent cover in the guppy tank, why separate them at all? I run a 10 gallon, 37 litres, tank that is mixed sex guppies. It gives me more than I can keep up with in the way of survivors and I sell off almost all adults every few months. I do have a large clump of java moss in their tank to promote good fry survival.

+1 to the above!
I have a 10 gallon guppy tank and they breed like mad....some survive by hiding in the plants (floating type too) and some get eaten. Can't keep up! Some are also fed to my fish in the 135 gallon!

I have a preggo guppy I just got her. And she's dropping these mucis looking balls? What is this

You can let them out-

When they're big enough to not get eaten- bigger than the biggest fish's mouth.
They can easily search for food.
They're big enough so they wont get sucked up the filtre.
And they are fine with the current from the filtre.

well i think the six guppy fry could be let out as i've got 2 large plants and a few plastic ones. but now i've just finished catching about 40 new fry. suppose i was a bit over protective of them after having about 20 fry all get eaten in a few days. think that was the main reason i seperated them off. thanks. how much do you sell a guppy for? i've got about 20 adults and at least 60 fry over the two tanks. thanks

selling them to the local pet store- they can buy them off you for like 20p each. (thats if they will buy them from you- some will only take them off your hands).
You can advertise, and sell them yourself for up to £1.50.
So, you get the idea....
Selling them on your own takes longer, and more effort (but you earn more)
But selling them all to the store at once is quicker, but you dont earn as much.

Another way to dispose of surplus fish is to sell them at club auctions. You get something close to a wholesale price and the buyer gets a good deal too. The club gets their percentage which is what keeps clubs going. Clubs have expenses like speaker fees and meeting place rents that they must pay. A typical club membership fee cannot begin to pay the expenses, instead it ensures each member has some real interest in the club or they would not pay. Since club auctions are a fund raiser, both buyers and sellers from outside the club are welcomed. I often attend club auctions of other nearby clubs than my own as both a seller and a buyer. No matter how many surplus fish you have, there are always those ones at the auction that you simply can't pass up. Next auction for me is 15 OCT at TCTFS in Peoria, a neighboring club.
