I have 20 guppy fry. I have them currently in a floating breeder trap. They are a week old. when is the absolute safe time to put them in with the big fishies and guarantee they will not get eaten? I have 4 adult guppies: 1 male 3 female and two platies: 1 male 1 female in a 10 gallon with an internal filter and heater. I don't plan on keeping all 20. I don't have enough room. When they start getting their colors and you can tell apart the gender I plan of giving some to my LFS and giving some to a friend with a ton of tanks and a lot of tank space. Will they get sucked up by the filter?

It really is a matter of size.
If they are too big to be eaten then they will be safe.
They are about this long: ___ give or take a bit. probably a bit longer.

I`d say around 2-3 months. Pick the largest fish in the tank. If you look at his/her mouth then look at the fry, if you think the fry will fit it will probably get eaten.
I`ve had 2-3 month old fry eating new born fry.

I had 3 in a breeder net that I was trying to save. They were in there for almost a week when I noticed 10 more baby guppies from the same batch that were at least twice the size...that's when I decided to let them out because a breeder net really isn't a good place to raise babies...it will affect their growth. So I let them out and all three are still alive along with the other ten. I highly recommend letting them out asap because you want them to grow normally and healthy. If you want some to live just put in a few live or plastic plants that are nice and big and thick and they will do just fine on their own. :)

Thanks for the replies. I have a small tank that is finally cycled! I'm going to put them in there in two days (they will be two weeks old). I hope i didn't stunt their growth too much :/

Naw they're fine:) it just slows it down mostly :) good luck!

AHHHHH! They are starting to die :( I think they may have a fungus or something!? I hope its not ich but i think its spreading and i need to quarintine them asap! It whiteish splotches on thier tail and body. One of my big fish has something simular neer its gills under its mouth but i think its just part of the gill because once it flared for a second and to spot moved with the gills. she seems healthy but the babies dont. HELP!

Guppyz, please post your disease question in the tropical emergencies section. People there are far better at disease diagnosis than most of us here are.

Forgive me. I'm new to this and am not to great with the forums.

Good luck with your fish.

Okay Okay... Do not freak out! Fry need to live in a breeding tank unil they look like a miniature version of the fully grown fish. Fungus & other things can be caused by a unsterile environment of the fry which can make them have sicknesses. Fry have weak immune systems...like babies. But with fry, they do not have medications like us...not that I have heard of... But if your breeding tank is not clean, put the fry in your fish net, and clean it out with water out of the sink or bathtub. If you use any chemicals to clean in, flush it out with water very well and wait a couple hours before putting it back into your tank. Anywho... I hope this helps alot!
