I’ve just read on here about guppy fry getting stuck in gravel. I currently have gravel in my guppy tank (male only) but I am going to upgrade their tank and get some females, so obviously hoping for fry. Would it be advisable to get sand (or small gravel) in a new tank? I’m planning on raising the fry alongside the parents (so I will have lots of hiding places).

I have a fry tank and I have no gravel in it. My fry seem to be doing well without any type substrate. I have floating grass on the surface and most of them hang out there. The only time the go down to the bottom is during feeding time. I lost a whole batch of platy fry when I had gravel in the fry tank because they go down in the gravel to hide and couldnt figure how to get out. Maybe you could try the sand, but a bare bottom tank works best for me. Also dont forget to put some foam around the intake for your filter it will suck the babies into the filter system. Good luck fry are amazing to watch grow! :good:

I'll have a choice of two filters but I think I know which one I'll use.

One is an undergravel filter and I think I'll use this (if I use gravel)

and the other will come with a bigger tank (I'm not using it in the bigger tank but I HATE the filter, I've touched the filters twice and both times there has been a lot of blood involved - I always cut myself on it :().

But yes thank you for pointing that out as I probably would have forgotten :good:

I'll have to think about which substrate I use, as I have shrimp in the same tank and ideally I'd like a darker substrate for the shrimp colouration to show better :).
