I got 2 female and 1 male guppy at the weekend so was expecting some fry in the not too distant future.

However on Tuesday I was shocked to notice 2 tiny fry moving about the tank and hiding in the ferns :S. I assume that one for the females must have been pregnant when I bought her. The two fry have made it to today and seem to be quite clever at avoiding the other fish and there are plenty of hiding places for them in the tank.

One of the females looking like she is about to burst so I am assuming their will be more on the way.

1. Will they survive on the food I am currently putting in the tank - flake and bottom feeder tablets?

2. I have read that just prior to birth the expectant mother will have 2 dark patches towards the rear of her torso. Both of the females have 2 large dark patches each about 2-3 mm in diameter. Does this mean that they are both about to have more fry?

3. How quickly from the introduction of a male can a guppy have fry?

1. They should survive on crushed flakes.
2. That patch is know as the gravid spot, all females have it, it is their eggs or the fry, a pic could be most helpful for this.
3. It takes a month or so from the time of fertilaztion to birth.

They'll survive off that food, but it won't be the best for them. Try alternating in some small high-protein foods (Frozen, Live, Freeze-dried) a few times a week. And veggies are great for them too. Most any veggies can be used, however broccoli, zucchini, cauliflower, peas, and cucumber seem to be the favorites amoung fish keepers. It's usually best to blanch, or slightly steam the veggie, just to soften it up for them. And peas have to be shelled.

My guppy fry always grow big and strong i bought a food called TETRAMIN BABY POWDER FOOG. You can get in your LFS and it will last you for months i've bought 1 tub and it's only half used and i've had lots of babie for the past six months.
I would advise you to get some JAVA MOSS, as this is an excellent place for fry to hide, and there is small organisums that grown on it that the fry will eat.
