Ok I have just noticed a female guppy got stuck in my plant. her top find and tail aren't fanned out... and towards the back of her body has gone totally black... She also has trouble staying a float and swimming.

Should I take her out, and put a end to her life?
Does anybody know what the matter is?
Is it contagious?
The other 9 not including fry are fine...

How long has she been like this? You could possibly still save her if you can find out what the problem is. How big is your tank? What are your water parameters? Have you added any new fish in? I don't know about the black... I've never had my fish turn black but it kind of sounds like bad water conditions... What about the other fish? Have you noticed any odd behavior? Also... Sorry about all the questions, do you have any idea how many fry? What do you feed your fry?

1. Not 100% sure.
2. 9UK gal
3. Now testing.
4. Not recently... 1 1/2 weeks ago she was added to the aquarium with another 2 guppies like her and a corydoras
5. the other fish are fine and swimming happily.
6. she, is a shy fish...?
7. about 4-11 most hide
8. i find the fry crushed flake food, the adult fish flake food, and the catfish, JMC catfish pellets

Hmm so clearly this is not a water problem. The black spot does sound familiar but it seemed more the water conditions. Your kind of over stocked anyways. How big are your guppies right now? I'm looking into the black spot for you give me a little....

the babies are big enough to not be eaten bout half a cm? maybe a tad bigger

also around her cheeks/gills its redish...

the black part might just be her colouring. dark silver, purple and black thats what the other two look like, but the other 2 have their fins fanned and swimming easily.

How big are the adults? Like around her gills is red or actually inside her gills? I've been looking at fish turning black and it all leads to poor water quality. But we already now thats not an issue... There was something about a fish getting darker colouration due to pinched or damaged nerves. But thats from not being accumulated to the water properly. I don't understand whats happening with this guppy! :/ It seems very stange... There no other signs of disease? Just that she is stuck in the plant? Weird... If you have a QT you could try putting her in there and see what happening. But she doesn't sound like she will make it much longer anyways. I wish I could help more but this has stumped me... I'll keep trying to dig stuff up though.

I took her out a while ago and put her in a jug, all I had :(

she just lies on the bottom... put food in there and didnt bother eating

i think it's slightly red inside the gills

Black patches usually mean ammonia burns that are healing.
Red inflamed gills due to bad water quality to gill flukes.
How many fish do you have in the 9 gallon tank.
Any signs of laboured breathing or flicking and rubbing.
Gill flukes can cause bacterial infections on top, young fry are more prone to them.

Can you answer some of the questions asked.
Is she flicking and rubbing or laboured breathing with the red gill.

woke up this morning, and she was dead

Just startied reading this thread - sorry to hear that she eventually died. I was interested to read the point about the fins turning Black - I bought 5 new MALE guppies from my LFS on Saturday, did all the right things to acclimatise them in a tank that already has a number of 10cm female Guppys growing up - water stats were perfect and all the young are in good health since I put them in there over a month ago. I checked them on Sunday morning and 2 had totally lost their lovely irridecent Blue colouration and were totally Grey - just like a negative - wierd or what. During the morning their health deteriorated, rapid breathing, laying on the bottom then finally death. After an annoyed visit to my LFS I was told that due to in-breeding some Guppys are now so intollerant to changes (Ie different tanks etc) that they just die. The whole batch had been taken off sale because of this problem. Out of the other 3 male guppies I bought that day 1 more had died one had survived and the 5th which I put in my main community tank is missing in action - presumed dead!!!

I put it down to bad luck im afraid.
