i will soon be getting hold of 30uk gallon tank and i was thinking of just having guppys in it.
i thought of having 1 or 2 males and 4 or 5 females and just let it stock itself up then when it gets over stocked give some of the fish away/sell them/ feed them to other fish ect.
so has anyone ever done this and is it practicle ?
thanks

my sister has a 15 gal with gupppies in not exactly sure how many there is now but they started off as 5 now theres at least 15 definatly 5 males in there, although we tend to keep the fry

i have a guppy setup, its a 20 gallon. there are 4 females 1 male, although this will change to two males because the original male is not sexualy mature!

as long as there are alot of plants and hiding places for the fry then this setup is good.

good luck!

I wouldn't let the fry just build up to stock the tank, as no doubt they'll breed with their parents when they mature, letting inbreeding happen is not good livebearer breeding.

you're better having a couple of tanks, one for the breeding to occur in, and one for the fry to grow out in, then keep the ones you want to breed again for colour fin shape etc. and then breed them. Done properly you could have several tanks just for breeding guppies and picking out colour strains. Just letting random breeding happen in a tank can cause the fish to be weaker, have deformities etc.

how old are guppys before they become sexualy mature ?
because i would be able to shuffle the fish about as i do have the odd small empty tank lying around that i could hold certain fish untill i wished to breed them
thanks

well they are sexable at 6-8 weeks although i have a late bloomer that is just developing at 3 months old

i have been thinking and came up with an idea.
i thought about having 5 females and 2 males in a tank to begin with then when females become pregnant move the males into another one of my tanks, leaving the guppy one empty for the time, when the babies are born move them into another tank to grow up in, then keep adding the males of the batch to the guppy tank and when ever i want some more just add one of the original males into the one with the females in to get them pregnant and do it over again.
with the females i would either sell them/give them away/keep them away from any males/feed them to other fish ect

does that seem like on ok plan ?
i hope it wasn't too hard for you to follow
and thanks in advance

Yeah, that generally seems ok, just be sure not to let parents and siblings breed together, i know it may be difficult to tell when you have dozens of the things, but hopefully all will be well.
