I have a male lyretail guppy who i've had for about 6 months.

last night he was layed between my pleco's coconut house and the side of the tank, with his mouth in the gravel and tail completely vertical in the air. he wasn't stuck, so i just aggitated the water near him and he swam off completely normally, had a nibble of a plant and a play with one of the females and had a bit of dinner when i fed them. then a couple of hours later he was in exactly the same spot, doing exactly the same thing. his fins were moving a bit. so again i aggitated the water and he swam off normally. for rest of night he was swimming normally but now i've looked and he's doing it again!

ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate less than 50mg/l

those test results were yesterdays just before a 20% water change

no other symptoms apart from his tail fin is looking a little bit ragged. have watched him and noone is bullying him. he lives happily with 2 other males and 7 females. and everyone else is fine.

any ideas? or other info needed to help?
thanx

Stop bothering him! ;) But seriously, if you keep bothering, you'll make him stressed.

It's probably old age, inbred guppies do not live very long, so while mixed strain guppies can sometimes live for 4-5 years, the average line bred guppies for farms live to about 2-3 years, in my experience.

I'm sorry to say, but I think he's on his way to the big aquarium in the sky. I just spent two days trying to get one of my cories to rally after showing identical behavior, and this morning he left the planet. I think sometimes these things can't be explained. There's a reason, sure, but we might not figure it out.

He seems much better today. Was possibly practicing his headstands for the london 2012 british gymnastics team???
