To Helter's list one might add stress from their past life: how they've kept, stored, transported by the shop, wholesaler, breeder- temperature shocks, exposure to ammonia, parasites, bacteria etc etc. Many members have noted that the second generation often does better in their tanks. Which leads one to suspect that it is not so much a question of inbreeding (which should be getting worse and worse, as females often come from the shop pregnant from their siblings), but bad husbandry.
