I bought a dozen feeder gupps yesterday and 1 started to give birth in the bag! There are 4 males and 8 females.

How long will it take for there to be more guppies? Right now i am using them for food for my jack dempsey.

Well, if you have 8 females, and they each give birth about once a month....pretty soon! :p I'm not sure how many fry will survive though, because male and female Guppies tend to eat the fry right up. If you planted and decorated the tank up (What size tank anyway?) you might have a few more survivors. But if you really want them to survive, you should take the fry out and raise them up a bit, so they don't get eaten by the adults.

Eventually you might want to move up into bigger sized fish for feeders, I've heard of people using convict fry because they breed so often.

One thing I found good with breeding guppies is using java moss for them to hide in. Also, depending on the tank size they might not grow as fast if they don't have enough room... the bigger the tank they fast they grow, and live food helps not just them but the Dempsey as well once he eats them.

yeah my dempsey eats the tiniest darn things even brine shrimp. he is only 3 inches but he downs any small fish. I now feed my 2in texas some too and she eats them up.

If your jack dempsey eats all kinds of foods, why are you feeding it live fish?

Apart from the cruelty aspect, it isn't especially healthy for a pet fish to get hooked on live feeder fish. If at all possible, with aquarium fish you want to adapt them to a diet of flake or pellets. Only that way can you ensure they get a balanced diet. Add frozen foods like bloodworms for variety, and you're laughing.

If you simply like watching one fish eat another fish, then that's a bit sad really.

Cheers,

Neale
