i have 20 gallon tank with guppies and i had three of them for about one month then i added 3 more fish then all of them started dying i know it is probley from the new fish i added but the way in wich they are dying is very strange her is what is happing. the fish begins to act like it is playing dead and sinks to the bottom of the tank when it hits the gravel it darts up to the top of the tank it is repeated for about an hour and then it dies. sore far 4 of them have died this way what could be the couase what dsease?

Few Questions first:
What kinda filtration?
Maint. schedule?
additives used if any?
amonia?

Sounds like they are oxygen deprived. Or they can be suffering from a amonia spike that was caused by overloading the tank? Very important to check the water to assure you are not just having an amonia spike.
There are many parasites and diseases that can be brought into established aquariums.
start by narrowing down the water quality first. Filtration, must also be suitable to sustain the load plus the load of new fish.

A very common mistake made by hobbiest can also cause out of the blue fish deaths. Did you by any chance just put the new fish in the tank or did you dump the bag with the water the fish came in?
NEVER dump water from a fish bag into an established aquarium. this can very easy transfer parasites / diseases. Internal and external parasites i can go on and on.

Check the water and give us a tad more information if poss. to help narrow out the problem. but sounds like lack of oxygen or improper filtration causing toxic conditions.

EEK! I alway dump the whole bag of water into my tank, didn't realize I was skewing the tank at the same time! I carefully float the bag on top of the water for at least an hour, then dump the whole thing in! I'm glad I found this forum, so many knowledgable folks here :D

Hiya!
Well first of all hello everyone!

Anyway, I have just had the same problem, I bought 5 male guppies on sunday, it is now tuesday and by last night 4 of them were dead. All the readings were fine....Ammonia - 0 nitrite- 0 nitrate -10 Ph 7.0. They were in with 18 minnows.

We have since discovered that it is a change in the Ph of the water. Our guppies had exactly the same symptoms except that with 3 of them tails were completely shredded, I had to help one die because it was struggling so much and I couldn't watch.

Guppies apparently like alkaline water, the shop's tank had a Ph of 7.4 and our tank is 7.0 so not a big difference to us, but in terms of the Ph which is lagerithmic it is a huge jump. So it kills them basically.

If this doesn't make any sense tell me and I'll post again when I'm slightly more awake! As for the guppies, I have one in isolation because Im sorting tanks out at the moment, but he's fine if not somewhat annoyed with me and bored to be on his own with just a filter and an air stone for company and no toys. It's a hard life being a fish.

Anyway, hope this helps, try putting salt in the water, 1 teaspoon of sea salt to every gallon is what we've been told will help and it won't harm the other fish as far as anyone knows, it might not be great for them, but it's only short term hopefully!

Ok, Im off
(Sorry if it makes no sense!)
