Hi,i have about 40 fry, doing good, but it seems to me that they are taking long to get pregnant, about 4 females never had given birth or gotten bigger in the last two months, my water quality is good finaly,,, 2 males are pretty hard braging to the females.. i have about 10 females and 5 males.i give them some bloodworms once a week. Any advice?

What are you expecting from 40 fry?

I don't quite understand what your concern is here. How big is your tank, and do you have a separate tank for the fry? How long has your tank been set up? If everything is good and the females you're trying to breed are actually mature enough to do so, there shouldn't be a problem. You might want to bring the temp in the tank up a bit. Other than this I don't see a problem. It does take about 28 days for the cycle from fertilization to birth.

Sorry,i said it wrong,i have 40 fry so im not complaining,but 4 female gups,mature,about 3.5 cm,they arnt gettin pregnant. The tank is about 40 - 50 Litres

Are all those fish in the same tank? If so maybe those 4 femles have already had some babies without you noticing. When a large number of females are kept in the same tank it's very hard to tell who had babies and who didn't. Some females don't get that big and don't look pregnant even when they are, when compared to larger females in the same tank.

I was in a similar situation with one of my female guppies. Her sister is the same length as her but a bit fatter and when the sister is pregnant it is obvious. I thought that this particular female was sterile and didn't have babies. For one pregnancy I decided to save some babies and I removed the fatter female to give birth in a seperate tank. Then I realised the one I thought never gave birth had given birth in the main tank whilst the fatter one was in a seperate tank. The fatter one gave birth a few days after that.

So all this time they both probably were having babies around the same time but I thought it was just the one female.

Hope this helps and good luck with your guppies.

Cheers,
Mothi

That makes sense thanx :good:

Oh and another thing, when do u know when you have to many plants in the tank, probly the wrong place but dont want to post just for this tricky question..

Not sure to be honest. I guess when there is no more space left for any fish to swim

I have 5 female gupps. And surprisingly the last female to give birth was the thinnest of them all!
When I first got my last batch of gupps they all looked thin then next thing I know there's babies in the tank.
Kinda like humans I guess, some women get massive, some hardly show!

15 is better than saving none at all x you'd be surprised how many are still hiding mind! i had my female give birth in a 20l planted tank where she was on her own with a few 2 month old mollies. she went all thin and i could only see 2 new babies so i thought she had aborted. put her back in main tank and 2 ours later around 20 fry emerged from the plants! the're great at hide and seek!

15 is a great save! You didn't really want 150 little fry wandering around, did you??

Ja im pretty glad i got to save some, theyre getting a hand full, gonna move my adults to a bigger tank soon so the fry can nave a litle more space

I have attempted to raise fry in a breeding tank floating in main tank twice with a small success. the difference when you raise the fry in a separate tank on their own is amazing!! mine are thriving! :D
