my girlfriends guppy had dropsy  and had been preggnant for well over a month. You could see the spot on her, we asked about the disease at a local shop and they told us the the most humane thing to do with her would to be getting some water out the tank with a bowl and then putting her in there. Then when she was calm to pick her up and stroke her stomach from head to tail pushing gently on it untill the fry came out. we did this most of the fry that poped out were alive and could swim but slowly just stoped moving very much we thought this was due to the fish not quite knowing what swimming was seeing as they had only just been born. (I would like to say that this fish was well beond the state of rescue and instead if just letting her die and kill the fry also with her death. This is the only reason we did this.) we put her in a quarentiene tank so she could ether have more fry or just die in comfort. A few short hours later she decided she was to gone and just stoped moving, :byebye: a very heart breaking occasion but the guppie just thought it was time. We put the fry in the tank in a breading net with some hikari fry food watched them for a bit then moved on and got on doing other things then about 2 hours on returned and all the fry had disapeared. would enyone know what could have happened? the fry were so tiny they did not even look like fish more like brine shrimp and could move and swim fine. its unexplainable.

Guppy fry are so cute! I'm sorry to hear about the mommy guppy....how sad

As for the fry, they do love to hide if you have them in a normal tank, we had molly fry in a 10 gallon tank for them only, there was about 19 of them! One day I took a look and they were gone, couldn't believe it! I was upset, but when I put the net in the tank one day to ruffle the plants, they scattered, they were hiding in the plants and in the rocks, they'll be fine if that's where they are, they grow quickly and just keep adding the fry food.

If they aren't in the bottom hiding, did you possibly put a net over the filter? Depending on the current, the filter could be strong, you may want to check your filter and put a old nylon stocking or an actual net over the filter.

Hope this helps!

Inspect the net for any damage and any holes that could be big enough for the fry to escape. Aswell as this sadly, check for bodys.

However when checking for bodys remember that there may only be a few, as there is a small chance the others could have eaten then and died afterwards. (However, this is unlikely as new-born fry are very small and can't eat anything of size.)

thank you all for your help the breading net is newly baught and has been checked for holes. We asked at a pet shop today and the person we spoke to said that they could have died and because of the bones being so small they would just disintergrate. I cant beleive they just went though. poor little guys. :dunno:
