They made a mistake... It was supposed to be printed 90 hrs. but they put days by accident. They have recently tried to change it down to 10 days. All the people a CS desk dont ever notice when theyre a day or two over... It used to be 3 days.

My Walmart has had female bettas ever since I can remember... they never clean the cups at my Walmart. Literally never. I was in there today, which is the day before they get a new fish shipment, and there were bettas in there that I saw a week ago in the exact same (now filthy) water. I guess they just leave them like that until they're either bought or they die.

I know they do! But luckily at my wal-mart, they sell very well. (Most likely b/c they are replacing one they bought a few weeks prior LOL)

When my walmart first opened they sold goldfish at 23 Cents each! That really drew the crowds in. Thats what I think first got me hooked on fish as a hobby. So in a way, I thank them for getting me intrested in the hobby

I just sent this to them through Walmart.com. Lets see if anything happens.

I frequently shop at Wal-mart #1321, located in. I often buy aquariium supplies from this store. I find it appalling that every time I shop that department I often find dead fish floating in their tanks. This has been on the last 6 occasions. And I am in there at least 2-3 times a week. I have informed employees only to be told that was not their department, and I have told a department manager. He took care of removing the carcasses from the tanks, but obviously there is a problem in the tanks and somethng is killing the fish. I would hazard a guess that they are not being properly looked after. This is also very disturbing for my small children to witness. I keep fish as pets, and my children have an appreciation for life and this bothers them. I know a lot of people look at fish as throw away pets, but in my opinion they are just as much a valid pet as a cat or dog. I also believe a call to the ASPCA will be necessary if I do not notice an improvement.
You inspired me, kingsgal... I just launched my own complaint ;) :

I frequently shop for aquarium supplies at store #163 located in Nacogdoches, Texas. The live fish this store carries are kept in absolutely appalling conditions -- in fact, I use the term "live fish" only very loosely, since it sometimes seems like there are more dead fish than live ones! To my knowledge, there is no one specifically assigned to work in that department, and whenever a customer wants to purchase a fish, they generally have to wait anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes for an employee from the garden center or toy department to arrive and net their fish for them. The tanks are bare-bottom, perpetually covered in fish waste, and have water marks on the outside of the glass because no one even cares enough to wipe off the drips and spills after netting a fish. Diseased fish never receive treatment and are left in the tanks for uninformed customers to purchase.
Is it policy for your stores to knowingly sell damaged merchandise to customers? It seems to me that selling them diseased fish is no different, and that is exactly what is happening in store #163 on a daily basis.
The worst is the bettas... they are not fed, and the water is never changed in the tiny cups they are kept in. They are simply put on the shelf and left there until they are either purchased or they die.

I have seen Wal-Mart stores with healthy, well cared for fish, so I know it can be done. I would like to see conditions improve in store #163, but would prefer that they stop carrying live animals altogether if they aren't going to take the time to care for them properly.

There is a Walmart employee on this forum by the name of Rabbitlady who has asked that we let her know about the conditions of fish departments in other Walmart stores, she needs store number and location. She will be attending a seminar next month and she wants to go in armed with information and any ideas we may have concerning how they can better care for their fish. I would suggest that any of you who have information she could use to PM her. She has a very clean and well run pet department and wants to do what she can to help other stores take better care of theirs.

My walmart for the first 4 day had a nice clean fish department.

I have 4 Wal-marts within driving distance to me, and only 1 has a really cared for fish department. It is always clean, the fish look healthy and well looked-after. I always tell the lady there how much nicer it is, and how I wish she could train everyone else. That's the only place I buy fish from (as far as dept stores go). I feel if I'm buying from the others, they'll keep stocking and killing them too.

Well my wal-mart, AFTER i asked for help, made me wait 1hr before he came to help me!!!!!! And then when he got there he helped everyon else first and sold the fish I wanted!!!!!!!!!! :grr:

You know every single fish I've ever bought from Wal-Mart has died...whether it was from ich or something mysterious...it was always something soon. I think we should just start calling it, "the Wal-Mart curse".

I buy fish from walmart BECAUSE they're dying.
I have brought all of them back from whatever nasty atrocious thing they had when I found them. I got all but 5 of my bettas from there. (I've gotten 18 total, 2 have passed on - one from a stupid mistake by me, and the other because some little drunk bastard at a wedding reception decided to dump two of the *table decorations* (i.e. betta fish in tiny bowls) together. :grr:

Anyway - I have raised some hell in regards to that store - and the conditions always improve for a while after I raise the ruckus - and then they go down the crapper again. I have to go in there every couple of months and start calling and emailing again. It's a pretty vicious cycle. NOT my favorite day when I go over there and do a wellness check, because I KNOW that I'm going to find something that completely disgusts me.

I DESPISE that store.
I'm glad that places like Target and ShopKo are starting to pull into competition with them, at least a little bit.

Woohoo, the second I woke up this morning the phone rang and it was the assistant manager for the pets department at my Walmart... she said they had just gotten a new manager and were in the process of training some new employees to work with the fish, along with putting the tanks on a more frequent cleaning schedule... yay!! She said I should start to see improvement over the next couple of weeks, and I certainly hope she's right... if not, I know her name now and know that she's one of the ones responsible :shifty:

Hi eudielynn :)

Thanks for mentioning rabbitlady's request for information.

Here's a link to the thread she was using to gather that information. It would help the cause if everyone would post their complaints or compliments on it so she can convey them to the management.

If anyone inside Walmart will go out of her way to help improve the conditions for the fish, it will be rabbitlady, for sure! :D
