Good morning, hope everyone had a good weekend.

This weekend, after I gave some of my stock to a new home, I went out and got some more fish and plants etc. I got everything at my LFS, but they were out of bolivian rams :( So I stupidly went to another FS (big corporate one). Brilliant got two more rams.... as if it was that simple. I noticed yesterday that one of them has a swollen anus, with little red worms hanging out

So I rang up my LFS and even though they were closed, they were more than happy for me to go and pick up some medication. So now I'm treating the tank with Sterazin. I've only put in one dose (dosing on days 1,3,6,8,10 as per instructions), but I was wondering what else I can do to ensure I get rid of them??

Btw I'll get new pics up of the new scaping and fish soon :good:

The little red worms hanging out the fish's butt are camallanis worms. They are a parasitic thread worm and sterazin won't work on them. Many fish carry them and they gradually cause the fish to waste away before dieing from low blood levels and pressure (organ failure).

I use Nilverm (Levamisole Hydrochloride) to treat thread worms in fish but you might not be able to get it. There is a substance called Flubenol5 (I think that's what its called) that is marketed in the UK. Apparently it treats all sorts of intestinal worms and gill flukes. You can try the sterazin but it probably won'y work. See how things go and if no good, then do some big water changes before trying another medication.
Don't bother using Trichlophon, (Dipterex, Para-ex, etc) as it no longer works on internal parasites and is toxic to fish and people.

Cheers for the advice, but I've found waterlife products to be quite good. Protozin for example, is a great product and works everytime.

I'll look up Flubenol No.5 though, tis better to be safe than sorry.

I agree Waterlife products are very good but internal worms are difficult to eradicate and I never had success using any of the Waterlife products to treat them. Likewise trichlorphon used to treat them but due to it being used carelessly up in Asia it no longer has any effect on most fish parasites.

Keep the fish really well fed until they are free of the worms. It will help them live longer with the worms in them.

Anyway, see what happens. Good luck

Don't they do a small pack, than 500gal??

*EDIT* Right I've just ordered the pack for 500 Gal. Just incase the Sterazin doesn't work.

Now when this discus wormer arrives, I've got the decision of:

Do I stop the sterazin medication, do a 50% water change. Give it 2 days and start the Wormer treatment?

Or

Carry on with the sterazin and then at the end of the treatment course, do the 50% change and start the next treatment 2 days after?

I would remove the waterlfie med with water changes, run some black carbon.
I know with flubenol you could use other meds, what does it say about the wormer plus, can you use other meds with it.

According to the website from your link, it can be used with other meds. Although if any snails have survived the relentless attacks of my fish, they won't survive this. Apparently it wipesout snails as well as parasites.

I hope it works, it does say it gets rid of internal parasites, but doesn't mention any about camallanis worms
Flubendazole is the main active ingredient, is this good?

Can you let the board no if the med worked.
