I saw 4 female bettas in the same tank at the pet store but get this they had 4 female bettas and about 15 algae fish all in a ten gallon!!! I wanted to take the girls but I could not. grr it mad me so mad! I would have but I have no tanks left.

thats nothing compaerd to mine, they have about 10 blood parrots in less than a 10 gal, doesn't look much bigger than Blazes 3 gal

Mine has Blood Parrots, Oscars, and Firemouths in a 10 gallon because they "Sell Fast", or at least they told me that.

mine is just terrible with bettas to, they normally keep a male betta in one with atleast 30 tetras

I don't see how this is supposed to be surprising any longer.
It's a fish store. They overstock their tanks b/c they get alot of fish in. Of course that many fish aren't good in a permament tank, but with a store, they're going to hopefully sell the fish quickly so overstocking their tanks really isn't a big deal.
Now if it was so overstocked none of the fish could even move, then I could see a complaint.

One of my locals had all the Male Betta in one tank of about 20Gall....there wasnt a fish between them with a tail left. Once a random complaint to the manager arrived ;) the next week one Betta per tank (granted they are with Tetra's etc) better them than 20 other males i spose.

I have to agree with amunet. It's a pet store-the fish sren't going to stay there very long... a couple of weeks at most. I do agree it's cruel, but if every pet shop had to have the fish in a proper sized tank, you wouldn't see many fish shops around... it would be pretty expensive to get a 55 gal for every oscar, a 1 gal for every male betta, and whatever other tank sizes for each fish.

the lfs near me keeps like 150 neons in a 1ft tank about 6g.And malawi cichlids in a 8g 18inch tank. They keep bettas with the other fish and half of them are battered to shreads.

Mhm. I was kind of surprised at the anger over this. They have pretty high filters most of the time (to keep ammonia down) because they don't WANT their fish to die. It's their livelihood, they'll take care of them as much they can while being cost effective.
4 is actually a good number for female bettas. I'd be concerned if they had three.. Or two. In a tank together. As for the overstocking, that's a necessary evil for fish stores..
Where will they get the money to get several hundred tanks for a few hundred fish, just to keep ammonia levels down when they're going to be bought within the week anyway.
I've made the mistake of assuming things about the pet industry when I didn't know the full story, so I understand the anger, but consider it from their side. :) :good:

With the exception of putting the male bettas together, what is the big deal, really? They are meant to sell quickly and I know, in the stores around me anyway, they generally do. They get their shipments on Tuesdays and usually by Friday they are just about out of everything or very low anyway. I know that when I kept angels, their shipments would come in on Tuesday, i could go in there on Wednesday and there would not be a single angel left until the following week. The same thing with their oscars, fancy goldfish, and fancy guppies.

I don't mean to sound rude and I understand where everyone is coming from, but they are pet stores and they can't follow the 1" to 1 gallon rule. They simply don't have to room.
