After posting that my tank had cycled yesterday its all gone tits up. :( Added usual ammonia last night and when I tested this morning ammonia was sitting at 0.25 and nitrites have completely spiked again. Ammonia had been processing in about 7 hrs for nearly 2 wks so am quite

Whats gone wrong???

Sneezy,

Check your pH immediately as your cycle may have stalled. If pH is ok (above 6.5) it may just be a blip, which is quite common with newly established bacteria.

Cheers :good:

thanks BTT

Ph is 8.2. Could prob do with a bit of a ph crash lol

My ammonia is still at 0.25 at 12 hrs and nitrites are 1ppm from 5+ so are processing albeit slowly. am confused though becayuse ammonia has been processing in under 12 for ages. Could it be a late reaction to my substrate change on Sunday or could my initial nitrite disappearance of been a one off fluke reaction to the substrate change.

I got so excited about getting fish :(

this is exactly why we say to carry on adding ammonia for a week after the cycle finishes. not all the time but just occasionally you get an inexplicable blip and get set back a few paces.

can't say why it's happened btu just be grateful it's happened now rather than with fish in, it'll come back probably within a couple of days, just hold out only need a little bit more patience and you'll be done. :good:

Yes, so sorry for the setback sneezy, but this does reinforce the wisdom of the extra week of watchfulness. Hopefully all of us newcomers watching will take note.
