Hi
Sorry a little non-tropical in species (but not temperature), please forgive.
I have a ~ 20 cm long butterfly koi kept in a 270l tank with 3 similar sized koi and 1 goldfish, 4 4-5cm clown loach and 3 3-4 cm "hillstream loach" (Beaufortia sp.). I think there are a couple of Amano shrimp in the as well. It is at 24 C and filtered with a Fluval 304 and 2 large internals (foam and ceramic media with occasional use of carbon) with 15% water changes every 2 weeks, new water is first treated with Nutrafin Aquaplus water conditioner. No fish have been added for at least 3 months. Unfortunately, I have no chemical measurements.
I have been away for a couple of months and was having a good look at my fish last night. The butterfly koi (white/silver) appears to have several tumours or growths on the lower part of the tail fin on one side only. They are quite subtle and it took some time for me to notice them. The growths are roughly spherical, approximately 2mm diameter with the same colouration as the rest of the fish, looking a little like “skin tagsâ€￾ on people. They don’t seem to be furry like fungal infections. There is a red blood vessel leading to the affected area. It is feeding well and seems otherwise unaffected. The other fish display no symptoms.
Any ideas to the diagnosis and any treatment suggestions? Salt is out of the question as I believe the clown loach are sensitive to it.
Many thanks
Andy

yes clown loaches are sensitive to salt.

you say you've been away for a couple of months, has someone been looking after the tank, doing water changes etc?

can you get some pics they would be best to help with diagnosis.

yes, a friend has been maintaining the tank although I think they may have been a little overfed whilst away. I'll try to take a picture, a little tricky as the lumps are the same colour as the fish but I'll try, thanks for the reply

Do the growths on the tail look like a cluster of berries or a cauliflower.

They are quite discrete and spaced, perhaps 5 - 10 mm apart. They are more-berry like than cauli-like but not tightly clustered. I asked my flatmate to take a photo earlier (he is a very keen photographer) but not much joy, he'll have another go in the morning when the natural light is better although I'm not too confident of a clear image.
