I've finally managed to get a pic of a growth that has appeared on one the neons in the community tank. About 4 weeks ago I had a case of whitespot which was successfully treated but since then one of the neons developed a white growth on his mouth. He seems to hang away from the others but takes a full and active role in feeding. Viewed from the other side it seems to be a blister (bit more of a bubble) but looks more like a growth in the photo.

Could people please give opinions on possible causes and possible solutions.

Water parameters
pH - 6.8
Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 10-20 (between those values at each water change in last 6 weeks)

Its a 64l tank with 7 other neons, 2 pitbull plecs, 4 leopard cories and a betta non of which have shown any symptoms of disease in last 4 weeks. The whitespot only affected the pitbull plecs.

Hope you can help.

im not sure about the life cycle of ich but it does have a phase where its not visible on fish. as its in the water... you might of thought you cured it but it was actually just in the water? or it might be something else

I don't thinks its ich as I continued treatment for 6 days after seeing last signs then lowered the temp from 30 degrees C to 25 degrees it is now. No other fish have any signs of ich in last 4 weeks so I'm confident its not that but thanks for offering opinion. Thats what I'm after as I don't want to scattergun medicate.

Mouthrot / Mouth Fungus

This is caused by a bacterium, Flexibacter Columnaris. The symptoms of this disease are typically erosion of the mouth, commonly associated with a fungal like growth, which is in fact colonies of the column-like bacteria. Like finrot, mouthrot is associated with poor water conditions which must be corrected.

Treatment for Mouthrot / Mouth Fungus

Treatments (such as Interpet's Anti Fungus and Bacteria No.8) destroys the bacteria, halting mouth erosion although it may take some time for regeneration. The medicine remains active for several days thus preventing an immediate recurrence.

had this in 1 of my tanks seems neons are extremely susceptible too it mine started on 1 fish and within a week it had ripped through the tank even though i started treatment as soon as i spotted it.

Does this look like that? Its not cotton wooley at all but more like a blister when you see it with your eyes. And like I say its been there about 4 weeks with no deviation in size and no other tank mates have any fungus like growths. Sorry if I seem picky but I've never seen fungus in a tank and I can't find a similar photo on net to symptoms shown by the neon.

its exactly the same thing as mine had

Thanks! will get some meds tomorrow now that someone has given a definitive diagnosis (as much as they can), just didn't want to medicate when I didn't know what I was medicating for.

If you are still not 100 per cent on the diagnosis, separate and treat, so you don't stress your other fish! Having just gone thru whitespot treatment, their less likely to bounce back from a new round of medication. Pitbull plecs in my experience are a little intolerant of a lot of fungal medicines.

Good Luck Chappo! :good:

As above, I would only use the Interpret med if your separating the fish. I like API Pimafix as a mild fungus treatment for whole tanks, made out of West Indian Bay tree oil and water, instead of complex man-made chemicals :).
