Growth On My Texas?

hey guys
i have a 6 inch texas cichlid that has just developed 2 strange looking growths on the base of one of his pelvic fins.
they don't appear to be getting any larger (based on 3 days of observing)and the fish doesn't seem to have any of the normal signs of illness, eg he is still eating,swimming normally,breathing normal.
i have looked all over for clues as to what it could be but nothing really describes it???
i have taken some pics (not great ones as my phone cam isn't great)hopefully someone somewhere could shed some light on this as i really don't want to loose him as he is such a beautiful fish

any/all help is greatly received

thanks for the reply thereverendturtle i'm sure it isn't a bite mark tho,
if i was to try and compair it to anything i have ever seen before i would say they look like tics??
is it possible that this is what they are??
do fish get tics?
so many questions.....for once uncle google doesn't have the answer for

does it look like a white pimple? its hard to tell from the pics....

if it is then it may be nothing to worry about, hopefully. i had these appear on some of my discus a few years ago and they came and went. i never treated for anything and the fish didnt seem to be bothered by them. a bit of a mystery but if its the same thing then hopefully its nothing to worry about. i hope so anyway for you.

thanx mattlee they actually do look sort of pimple like
day 4 and still no sign of them getting bigger and no sign of distress in the fish himself

Is there any redness to the lump? keep a close check on it for it turning red and looking like this...

If it starts to look like the above pic it is the lymphocycist virus, normally found in marine fish but can affect tropical. It is a species specific virus your other fish are safe, but if you have more than one texas it will have the virus. This is a horrific virus to deal with, I lost 5 out of my 6 texas cichlids to it. If it does turn red and look like the above lump, remove him from the tank to a completely bare tank, no gravel decor anything he can rub against. The lump will drop off, try and remove it from the tank if you can, do daily water changes syphoning the bottom of the tank. Any small mark, graze or cut and the virus will re-attach itself to the fish. Be very strict with your declhorinator as anything (chlorine) that removes any of his proctective slime coat will allow the virus to re-attach itself through the "gap" in the slime coat. Soak food in vitazin, this has added vitamins to help the fish to fight off the virus. If the virus goes internal and attaches to the internal organs there is not alot you can do .

glad to hear that mate. i couldnt find out what they were when they appeared on my discus. just put it down to teenage symptoms it may well come back as mine did but can be worrying the first time you see them...
