Hi, I have several small twig like pieces of bogwood in which today I have attatched a thin layer of java moss to using cotton thread. I want the moss to 'attatch' to the wood and grow thicker as quick as possible but I thought it may be faster to grow it emersed in a sealed plastic container (with some water) by the window. In the past it seemed to grow faster and quicker on a piece of bogwood that came out of the water. My only worry is the moss may suffer when it is placed back under water as it has to re-acclimatise? The aquarium is low-tech, with 1.5 wpg, pH 7.5, low fish stock and no dosing regimen to speak of.

Cheers

It will grow faster out of the water, however as you said, it will need to re-acclimatise once you put it back in, and this will cause slowing of growth and maybe some die off.

The best way would probably be to keep it under water, but as close to the surface as possible, either in the tank or in some sort of container. This means that it is closest to the light, and if some is sitting on the surface, will get co2 from the air to grow optimally. This combined with regular fertilisation should give you reasonable growth.

I have got java and peacock moss in my hillstream tank and it grows like crazy. I do not add any ferts, but there is around 35x turnover per hour in the tank which keeps it nice and clean. Based on my experience, I would therefore say that good circulation is a key factor.

Thanks, I've actually decided to upgrade my tank and make it a higher growth setup. I've added more T5 lighting to 3wpg, an additional old external filter (now roughly 14X turnover per hour)and fire extinguisher CO2 unit with some leftover Tropica AquaCare nutrition ferts to get through before I use dry powders. So the moss and all the plants should grow much faster now. I'm going to keep the tank 'high-tech' for a couple of months and then put it back to normal as my parents have to look after it, so all of the plants are undemanding (Java fern, Bolbitis, Anubias, Crypts and moss).

Cheers.
