just wonderin will my fish only grow as large as the tank can manage or is this just a myth.

any help gratefull

I think it only applies to some fish, couldnt see a neon tetra gettin 30" long lol.

no thats not what i mean for example if a fish could grow to 10 icnhes but the aquarium would be too small would they stay at 4 inches for example

From what I have heard and read before it varies from fish to fish

What can happen is that their internal organs grow to the size of a 10" fish yet their body size is say only 6" resulting in potential illness, stress and ultimetely a shorter life span.

Hope that helps

I would love to hear other opinions,

Dan

I know we had a huge thread going on this.
I just can't see a fish being short and bulgy with huge organs in a little body.
I could see it not living healthy but I just can't buy the whole internal organs growing despite the room they have.

Also some fish don't seem to stop growing no matter what. Like oscars for example.

I agree. I do not buy the whole internal organs thing. I think that was a story thought up to keep people from putting goldfish in three gallon tanks. EDITED BECAUSE KIDDIES ARE LOOKING not vulgar just something you shouldn't tell other peoples kids ;) : (revision) should you tell your kids that there is a monster that will eat there toes if they don't clean there room. No because it's not true. You should tell them that if they don't clean there room they won't get any ice cream, or that they'll fall on there toys and hurt themselves. Just like you should not put a goldfish in a small bowl because he will have to swim around in putrid poopie water until he dies from stunting. I believe that the fish is stunted entirely. skin bones organs and life span. I think they emit a hormone that builds up in the water that causes this, but I'm not sure. We got any biologists in the forum tonight?

I second that, I've seen oscars out grow a ten gallon, it's almost funny to see them not being able to turn around, but not quite. -_-

I think the whole 'their insides get huge and they die' isn't so much as true as just something that helps scare the bejesus out of people who insist on stuffing a too large type of fish in too small of a tank. Stunting can happen though, but it can happen to other animals as well. I've seen dogs who were kept in crates almost entirely and they were much smaller than the breed called for. (go animal cops, bust them buttheads!)

The internal organs myth is the complete opposite of spot on. I have started and contributed to many threads about this exact topic. In every one I have asked for real proof. Not, friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend stories, certainly not internet stories, but real proof.

And, since this always seems to come up, I am specifically looking for proof that the bulging organs come from keeping a fish in too small a tank. Not just from poor water conditions and disease (since most people that try to shove a big fish in a small tank don't do all the necessary water changes and tank maintenance, etc.) And I do NOT need proof that stunting occurs. I know that stunting can occur, I want proof of larger than normal organs due to stunting.

Every piece of evidence I have seen shows that the fish's entire size is smaller which can lead to health problems. But never have I seen a bulging organ. I belive NinjaSmurf got it right that this was a story invented to scare the crap out of people -- but I have never found any proof of it anywhere. Nature just doesnt work that way.

I know that my gouramis are out growing my 10G. Everyday I get one day closer to buying them a bigger tank......Yet they keep growing...
